A very playful and acrobatic new polar bear that makes YWP one of the most exciting zoos in the UK (in my humble opinion)

      Great shot :)

      Thanks Nisha.
By the way he performed on that day there will be more of the same. Now I know how he behaves I can position myself at the side to try and get him airbourne. Maybe he will teach Victor how to do it soon.:D
Its going to be fun when they get the other enclosures finally finished,us photgraphers wont know where to be.

Fantastic shot...well captured. Did you get him hitting the water?

I suspect Victor being much older is more staid in his ways. Also I expect the 'best' behaviour will be while the enclosure is all new to this Bear- once he's settled down his activity levels may decrease somewhat.

Excellent shot btw. Same with your Hunting dog shots- new space/environment often stimulates increased activity in Zoo animals.

      Thanks regarding the photos.:D
Victor is a very active bear in his own way, just not quite as youthful as he once was. Hopefully when more enclosures are finished they will rotate the occupants on a regular basis so they don't get too familiar with each one. The 3rd enclosure, which will actually be the 2nd one to be finished doesn't have a very large pool, unlike the 1st,but has a much more "tundra" like look to it with loads of heathers and spruce trees. The 2nd enclosure, currently on hold, has a medium sized lake,a shallow rock lined pool and hopefully a large mound that will give the bears great views of the other inhabitants. They are all very different and should keep them stimulated.:)

Just on a side note, I wondered if the management have considered putting a pair of Arctic foxes in one of the enclosures and rotating them with the bears. I think they would enhance the whole "Project Polar" theme.;)

Better still have them in with the Bears. You need dens and bolt holes the Foxes can get into to keep out of the Bears way but it could work in such big areas without the Foxes sooner or later becoming bear food. Needs a bold approach and a preparedeness to invoke critisism from the 'Animal Cruelty' folk though.

Yes, rotating the Bears around the enclosures will certainly help keep activity levels higher.

Brilliant photo - a very attractive advertisement for the collection :)

I did think about putting the foxes in WITH the bears, but I wasn't brave enough to suggest it. I doubt that will ever happen as if anything went wrong and a fox was caught by a bear there would be hell to pay about it. Not great if it happened in-front of the paying public.

And thanks devilfish. It's one the favourites I've ever taken.

Bears and foxes are not an uncommon mix (often Corsac Foxes, but I've seen Red as well) so it's far from out of the question.
