Is Hamburg planning any other exhibit construction for the elephants? I mean after the indoor expansion in 2006, I presume they won't be doing anything much for a while??

Oh, i am really surprised... Twice the week i am visiting the elephants at Hagenbeck and normally they are in the enclosures outside in wintertime. Exceptions are possible: when it is snowing (rarely in Hamburg) because of the danger of slipping or in the moment, because of the newborn. They donīt want to separate the herd (the others inside become jealous and angry!) and for the little bullcalf itīs too cold in the moment. In wintertime youīll find the Hagenbeck elephants normally in the afternoon 2 - 3 hours outside, not more, because of the danger of freezing the ears etc.

@ dragon: In the moment Hagenbeck has to rebuild the "Eismeer" for the next years, which costs a lot. After this project they have some plans to expand the elephant-enclosure a lot and to modify the present one. There is room enough at the other side of the present bull-enclosure.

I think it is not the right way and time now to participate the wild guess, what will happen when Hussein is eventually (!) leaving Hagenbeck: Wait and see!

Awesome! the large herd at Hamburg is getting a new large exhibit! It is quite like Emmen, they have an enclosure large enough for the elephants but building something else that is state-of the art or brand new

No, I believe it is Sevilla, Baba from Terra Natura was sent there last year as a Patriach but died soon after arrival.

They always communicated that it would be Sevilla, since he is not only successfull as a breeder, but also most of his offspring is alive an thriving. And he's a second generation himself (his younger brother Victor is also a breeder), so there's enough of that gene-pool in the captive elephant population. Don't forget that there are 3/5 breeding facilities where he has left a lasting influence (Rotterdam, Dublin, Amsterdam, hopefully Antwerp and hopefully Amersfoort).

Old 14 Hours Ago

Yesterday 'Thura' gave birth to a female calf. The birth took place in the birth-indoors behind the big indoors. With her at that time was 'Shandra'.
Father is as always breedingbull 'Hussein'.
