Krefeld zoo news
Old 07-07-2010

A new thread, and a good way to start it is the birth of a female black rhino at the zoo, this the zoos first female was born a couple of days ago, this is the zoos 3rd black rhino birth after 2 males.

Krefelder Zoo: Erstes weibliches Spitzmaulnashorn in NRW geboren[backPid]=47&cHash=a208ee1ed3

2 million euros have been raised, and work is about to start on a new outdoor gorilla enclosure, a new addition to the 1975 ape house.
Today, five gorillas live at the zoo Massa , the silverback and his females Boma, Tumba , Oya and Muna .
Massa has now been retired from the breeding programme along with Boma and Tumba.
Oya and Muna will be joined by a new male in the new enclosure.

Krefelder Zoo: Startschuss für den Gorillagarten[backPid]=47&cHash=ba545a9f1e

Recent births have included 2 snow leopards and 9 ostrich, and Thabo the last born black rhino has left for Denmark.

I read it as the construction of a new 'tropical' House with both inside and outside enclosures. The Gorilla group will then be split and the existing male Massa(born 1971) and old females Boma and Tumba(born 1973) will stay in retirement in the existing house- infamous within Europe as the only Gorilla exhibit with NO outdoor access. So they still won't have an outside...

Muna (from Basel) who has never bred with Massa and Oya(I don't think she has either) are both just over 20, quite late to start breeding for the first time but still quite possible when a new male arrives. But they have to build the new enclosure first?

I imgine it hasn't been decided yet, presumably they will have to build this new enclosure first.

I was at Krefeld last week the outdoor land clearance has started, if the enclosure looks like the design shown at the zoo it should be good.

The new male Gorilla will be "Kidogo" from Givskud

Translated from German....

Kidogo is new head with the gorillas

Together with "Muna" (22 years old, born in Basel), and "Oya" (23 years old, born in Zurich), he should start a family and build on the excellent breeding success of gorilla home group to "massage". Since construction of the monkey house in the tropics in 1975 holds the Krefeld Zoo western lowland gorillas, and since then has delighted more than seven pups. Now, should usher in a new gorilla house with grounds in a new era in the endangered apes.

The decision to "Massa's" successor is a great relief for the zoo staff. Since becoming aware of "Massa's" infertility, it was clear that another male gorilla gorilla would move into the new garden. In mid-June had recommended the book from Apenheul gorilla breeding, the Netherlands, the zoo the young lowland gorilla from Denmark. A small delegation consisting of zoo director Dr. Wolfgang Dressen, biologist Cornelia Bernhardt and the keepers Golinowska Werner Nielsen and Knut went to the casting in Denmark. In intensive observations and interviews with zoo staff were able to convince the four experts from the good social skills of the animal. "` `Kidogo is a perfect landing for us. We are highly satisfied with the recommendation of the pedigrees and see very positive about the future of our gorilla breeding, "zoo director Dr. Wolfgang Dressen expresses himself through the exuberant young gorilla. "When deciding on a new silverback, one must be aware that this is decisive for the next decades. `` Kidogo is there really a godsend. He ruled his family by the gorilla etiquette and already has experience with younger siblings, "added Cornelia Zoobiologin Bernhardt.

"Kidogo" is a western lowland gorilla and has its origin from a large family group already has a great social skills. To lead to his future role as silverback and a harem to protect is an essential aspect. Advantage of his knowledge is also an outdoor area. Translated his name means "little one". He is the first gorilla born in Givskud and is venerated as in Krefeld rhino Davu. Meanwhile, he has two younger siblings and was able to gain experience already with young animals, the later it will certainly be helpful in his own offspring.

Welcome to the Krefeld their new monkey-chief, will still take a little time, because "Kidogo" can be until January or February to his new "Villa Gorilla" move. Until the works are completed so far in the interior, that the house is ready.

Kidogo is obviously very suitable as he's mother-raised from a social group. What they don't talk about is whether the two females he will join will still be suitable for breeding as both are in their early twenties. Still, it has been achieved at other zoos okay.

Not quite 'young'. Its a young male with two middle-aged females both over twenty. Still, hopefully they can still breed okay.

Young as in opposed to the first generation of Krefeld gorillas.
Incidentally, one of these females has actually previously bred and given birth. The other at least has some experience of others bringing up baby ...
