The three years old okapi bull "Steve" was shipped to Berlin Zoo today to breed with the 5 year old female "Batouri". Leipzig will receive a female okapi this year to breed with bull "Kimdu" (*2005).
Today in the afternoon zoo director and WAZA president Dr. Jorg Junhold annonced that 2 Indian elephant cows ("Hoa", born in Vietnam in 1985 and "Indra", born in Hamburg in 1996) are definitely pregnant and are going to give birth in february/march 2012. A third cow ("Trinh", born in Vietnam in 1982, mother of the last calf, "Voi Nam") is probably pregnant too. Father to-be of all three unborn calves is bull "Naing Thein" (born in Burma in 1980). Her arrived in Leipzig in november 2009 from Prague Zoo.
"Naing Thein" really is an amazing breeder, as he has already proven in Emmen. Lets just hope the calfs are not all bulls again...
According to various sources, the female born in 1996 at Hamburg and now pregnant is called "Salvana". Does she have two names, or did you get some of them mixed up (or did you just guess "Indra", it seems that with Indra you are about right for 50% of the female zoo elephant population )
"Salvana" is the name of the sponsor who adopted the calf after its birth and so her official name is "Salvana". Her real name (the name the keepers use) is, however, "Indra".

Second article talks about a pair and last one about 2 female elephants (much mor convincing ) But Zoo Leipzig has stopped keeping cheethas some years ago, so I wonder where those come from? Or is someone just using Zoo Leipzig's name for some private deal?
Indian bureacracy and *** (I will not cite the word through here). It is rather sad to think that private individuals are allowed to contravene animal exchange deals. This goes both for international and local. Hence, my secret word Indian bureacracy being the single most important factor why conservation breeding and zoo modernisation/renovation programmes in the country are mired in pfffffffhhhhhh ......
What the .... is Leipzig going to do with (one or) more young bulls? Isn't there enough diversity in the USA and Europe to keep the breeding program going for a bit? Without more bull-holders the EEP will grind to a halt anyways...

You are not ... (well not in the brain drain vein )! It is rather unfortunate that threads keep getting cut up. It makes way for revolving old and checked-over stories time-and-time again. This one has been around for the 3rd time (and I should know with my prediliction for Indian zoo news). It would be better if the Indian zoos news section were used more often anyhow!
Amur leopard "Balin" (born in Frankfurt, May 27th 1988) died last weeks. Several animals from Tiergarten Bernburg (reen acouchis, bush-dogs, birds) were shipped to Leipzig Zoo last month. The Tiergarten was dramatically overwhelmed by the rivers Saale and Elbe.
