I was there in September and saw all three couas at close range. Fantastic and beautiful birds. The entire park is phenomenal. I spent 3 days there and still missed a few species!
Does anyone know if the Japanese Crested Ibis listed on zootierliste will be show on display this year?
There's a spectacular new species, didn't know they where there... My guess would be that they'll be kept behind the scenes, but since Walsrode has a new owner (2009?) a few rare species have been moved on show (like the twelve-wired bop's, the sickle-billed vanga's and the hooded cranes).
The source was questioned by the Zootierliste admins and therefore the entry has been removed. It could still be true, but people are still trying to get any confirmation...
I know it is no longer kept well up-to-date but the on-line version of ISIS DOES NOT list Nippon nipponia as in the collection at Walsrode. The only ones in an ISIS listed zoo are Tokyo Tama (where breeding). Does not mean Walsrode could not get them or what ..., it just makes it .... well the plot thickens!
Walsrode doesn't list any of its collection on ISIS at all. Would this be the first time this species has been exhibited outside China/Japan?
No. London Zoo received a specimen in November 1872. It was presented by Robert Swinhoe [after whom Swinhoe's Pheasant, among other species, is named], a diplomat in China.
I know they have a lot of rare species. I just come on it by accident on zootierliste and wandered if it was true! Hope that it's true, amazing species! ISIS is not very up-to-date at all, not for walsrode and for a large amount of zoos!
Any news on the crested ibisses? And what about the BoP from Chester. They were supposed to go to Germany and then Walsrode is the most logical place for them to go. Does anyone know if the BoPs arrived there?

wow that is outstanding! A species so rare when I was younger that I would have bet it would never be seen in a zoo outside China or Japan.
Can anyone say how much time is needed to see walsrode? I am going there in march but I'm still not sure if i'd go 1 of 2 days..
Depends on how much you`re into birds. If you are really, really interested, 2 days. If you can live with missing some specialties and get overwhelmed from too many birds, one day is enough.
What we did it in a day and a half, with the other half-day at Serengetipark Hodenhagen. I think if you're going to do it properly for the first time then more than a single day is advisable. When we went (2007) it was possible to arrange a short but very bird-y behind the scenes tour for (if I recall) €50 if you email well in advance - this is well worth doing if you can justify the cost - we had a party of 10 so it was just €5 each and I've never spent a better value hour!
Have to agree with Maguari about how good the behind the scences was,I'm not that much into birds but even I enjoyed,seeing a very young Kagu,and more young Cranes than I have ever seen in one place!!
