Since the move of Twycross' "Miri" and Monkey World's "Hsiao-Ning" to Rostock, I have become really interested in the Orangutan's there and would really like to know where all the individuals come from! Currently (just from browsing the internet) I know: Ejde (M) ?x? Sunda (F) ?x? Sabas (M) ?x Sunda Miri (F) Batu x Maliku Hsiao-Ning (F) Tuan x RoRo Are there any other orangutans at Rostock? And are they all Bornean? And does anyone know more about the parentage of these individuals?

How come Monkeyworld sent one of their Orangutans to a traditional-type Zoo? I thought they didn't agree with traditional zoos etc. Did the EEP request this transfer and Monkeyworld complied?
This was how they explained it on Facebook at the time: Hsiao Ning is moving home! As you are aware, we have been trying to graduate Ning into one of our adult groups for a very long time now, all to no avail and at 9 years old she is no longer a baby and really should be with adult orang-utans now. Despite any sadness you may feel, I would ask everyone to please understand that we have to do what's best for Hsaio Ning, not what suits us and to keep Ning for the rest of her life in the nursery group is not in her best interest. A fantastic opportunity has come up for Hsaio Ning at a new state of the art ape complex at Rostock Zoo in Germany, DARWINEUM im ZOO Rostock: Fotos. Hsaio Ning will not be on her own, she will be with Sabas, a young male orang-utan who was born at Rostock Zoo and another 9 year old female called Miri will also be joining them, it will be a great opportunity for Hsaio Ning to mature and develop with others who are of a similar age and size to her. No more scary introductions with fully grown adult males! Jeremy and Lluis will be travelling with Ning next week and will stay with her until she is settled, we will of course keep you updated of her progress. I know that Ning is very special to all of you, she's very special to us to, we will miss her terribly, but we must put our personal feelings aside and do what's right for Hsiao Ning.
Monkey World were left with little choice but to co-operate with the EEP and arrange a transfer. They'd kept her in the Nursery group for several years before trying to integrate her into Gordon's group. However she and Gordon never got on, despite months of work and introductions. The only other options would have either been to have kept her in the Nursery long term or to have instead put her with there other group which is headed by her father (Taun) which would have obviously given her no opportunity to breed (at least in the short term) Luckily Monkey World came to there senses and on this occasion agreed to work with the EEP to find her a new home... Hopefully the move has been enough of a success that they'll agree to similar transfers in the future (there's a couple of males that will need shifting before too long unless they create another group)
From what I can gather, Monkey World had real problems integrating Hsiao-Ning with their adult Orangutan groups as she was scared of the adult males. Putting her in with the juvenile Sabas and Miri hopefully means she will grow up with them, and won't be scared of Sabas when he's fully grown. From what was said by Monkey World, it sounds as if Rostock asked/offered Hsiao-Ning a place. But, yes, it was an out of character move for Monkey World.
Yes, I did. I think that was a very sensible/logical decision by Monkeyworld- if this transfer proves successful maybe they will come to accept that more conventional zoos have their uses too!
If there is one good reason to kick out an institution for not cooperating with EAZA on its EEP's and being hybrid commercial oriented venture / facility (vis a vis what they promise on camera and do off camera to individual zoos with surplus individual primates) and a denial to adhere to or underwrite the basic charter of EAZA goals Monkey World is your game! On topic: Rostock does have a wonderful exhibit for great apes now!
Not that I know of- they seem to like to hang on to them. But the young Sumatran male 'Silvestre' has no prospective partners there and also came there via the EEP(from Santander in Spain) not as a rescue like their other Orangs. So its possible they might request he be moved again at some stage.
