Since March 5th, 2009, Zoo Karlsruhe keeps a new lioness. Only 3 Month after the death of "Twiggy", 0,1 "Safo" from Loro Parque,Teneriffa was transferred to Zoo Karlsruhe. At the moment, 19 year old "Menelaos" is seperated from "Safo" until the keepers are confident both animals can safely join each other.

Two young snow leopards, born 3 weeks ago, suddenly died: The two snow leopards 'Julika' and 'Assam' had the second offspring three weeks ago. But two days ago, the young snow leopard babies died without any prior warning. The last day, Julika, the female snow leopard, took the couple to the outdoor exhibit, which was not the case with her first offspring (moved a half year ago to other zoos). The first researches revealed an abnormal blood-system-development as the reason but the pathological researches endure a while. 0,1 reticulated giraffe moved together with one from Rotterdam to the ZooParc de Beauval in Saint Aignan.
Karlsruhe Zoo plans to give up the keeping of the two female javan bantengs. At the moment, they live in Tierpark Oberwald because of the construction works at the banteng stable and the stables in the savannah area. EEP is now searching a new home for the two bantengs.
What is the rationale behind this? Are they planning to renovate their exhibit for another cattle species? Or are there other plans for the open space?
They will use the space by enlarging and renovating the camel and the ostrich/zebra stables. Maybe, they use a bit of the space to enlarge the camel enclosure too but that's just an idea.

I feel so pitty for all of them-for the new elephants and the old ones. Fortunately, old elephants do not move so much, so it is okay to keep five of them in a tiny exhibit, which would be only good enough for a small pack of pygmy goats....
Karlsruhe Zoo received two ("Eco" & "Lili") Southern three-banded armadillos, one from Heidelberg, one from Halle. In the next future, their new home will be the new "Exotenhaus".

I was under the impression that the current elderlies have benefitted much from FC. So, no need to - in fact detrimental to their overall health status -. The new ones as far as I know are also more or less in partial contact.
I'm not agianst FC. But Frosja is a difficult elephant, who in past has tried to attack her keepers on a number of occasions.
Six elephants in a 1100 square meters small enclosure-including moats and pool.And noone knows if both groups can be kept togehter-probably not, so they have to split the enclourse into two parts, each of 500 square meters for three animals Should elephnats be kept in Zoos ? Not at these place, for sure. But I forgot-they are pretty old cows, and they do not move around so much, so it is okay to keep them in a tiny enclosure ?
Evermore species arrive at the zoo, waiting for the new "Exotenhaus" to be finished. The official website tells about, among others, 3 Brazil-nut poison frogs, so Karlsruhe is beside Cologne the only zoo in Europe keeping this species, Cologne keeps them behind the scenes however. Other arrivals will be some, according to the website, Bowfin, what would be even more amazing because this species is kept in none of all european zoos.Some other species moving into the "Exotenhaus" that are already known for publicity are Maranón poison frogs, Yellow-banded poison frogs, Australian lungfish, Aldabra giant tortoises, Hermann's tortoises, Radiated tortoises, Merten's water monitors, Australian water dragons, Southern three-banded armadillos, Sunbittern, Oriental Magpie Robins, Red-crested turacos, Madagascar fody, some other sort of fish (I can't mention all now xD), flying foxes (not knwon which species exactly), sloths etc... As soon as it's opened to publicity I make a list with all species.
With the new director (Dr. Matthias Reinschmidt - came from Loro Parque), I'm looking forward that the last time's progress will be continued. The first promises are very promising.
