Sagittarius serpentarius birth
Old 11-07-2008

Last Sunday at the falconry du Puy du Fou is born a Sagittarius serpentarius. This is the first birth in captivity in France and third in Europe.

This species used to be kept quite widely but presumably not so much these days as it so rarely breeds. What is the secret to getting them to breed?

Planckendael wild animal park in Belgium has a couple of secretary birds that bred successfully and reared a chick in 2006.

at the moment planckendael has some 8 secretary birds. and I believe there are youg or at least viable eggs at the moment.

the new animals are behind the scenes and came to the park recently. they were seized by customs in italy a few years back together with several vulture species (like those in rotterdam zoo)

safari beekse bergen now also has a pair coming from the same source as the planckendael group.

I have heard Allwetterzoo Münster breeds them on regular base. Birdpark Walsrode and Tierpark Berlin has bred them too, but I do not know the current situation there.
