That's quite common in Gorillas not used to large outdoor areas. The new male at Apenheul came from Krefeld Zoo and had never been outdoors(their exhibit hasn't got an outside) At Apenheul he refused to go outside to begin with but he's okay now I believe.

I think 'Sally'(Salome, born in Frankfurt, and sent to Dublin for a year or two) is now dead but has one or even two offspring living in the group?

Sally and Salome is not the same gorilla. Sally came from Dublin (not sure where she was born), and is very much alive. Not sure if she has had one or two babies with Samson. Salome came from Copenhagen with Samson. Her only child Effie was sent to Berlin a few years ago. She died of a tumor one or two years after the arrival to Givskud .

Sally's proper name is also Salome! The 'other' Salome I think came from Rotterdam Zoo. 'Sally'(Salome) was born in Frankfurt(Solomon x Makulla) in 1969 and was sent, aged nearly 30 years to Dublin then a year later in 1999 to Givskud.

Are you sure she's still alive? I heard that she died a year or so ago. (The other Salome's daughter 'Effie' is now in London Zoo.)

I did not know this. Thanks for the background info

I saw her in August, and have been recieving the newsletter from Givskud Zoo for a long time. She is also still registered in ISIS, so yeah, I'm pretty sure she is alive.
Thanks for the info on Effie. I knew that she had moved from Berlin, but I didn't know to where. I hope she is enjoying her new Gorilla Kingdom .

UPDATE
Randers Regnskov Tropical Zoo announced today the birth of five bush dogs. Randers is one of the few zoos in the world to breed bush dogs, and it's the first time this has been done in Scandinavia. The pair has lived in the zoo since 2003, and some of us was beginning to wonder if they would ever breed. But in the summer 2007, they surprised everyone with a litter of three cubs, and in January another five cubs was born. Congratulations Randers

I have heard that Frankfurt`s Salome died some time ago too... she left a 3 or 4 year old male behind. I am pretty sure she is really dead, unfortunately, my source is extremely reliable. Her son is be very important genetically, isn`t he Pertinax? Samson is wildborn with not many breeding offspring (yet), and Salome`s parents aren`t well represented, neither, at least her dather Solomon isn`t if I remember right.

ex Frankfurt 'Salome'
Old 06-02-2008

ex-Frankfurt Salome(Irish 'Sally') has definately been dead some time.. I don't have her death date though. Toddy might(?) have seen her last August but I don't think so as I believe she had died previously to that...

Yassa is correct- she has left a son 'Kipenzi'(born 2002) living in the group- he pined after his mother's death but with support from the others, he got over it. This was Salome's first baby after a very long spell of non-breeding, she also has one daughter Leisel(from her Frankfurt days) in Budapest who herself has bred several offspring. Salome was the ONLY offspring of the Frankfurt male Solomon(in between 'Abraham' and Matz') who didn't live very long at Frankfurt and her mother was Makulla(now dead) who also has few living representatives.
I'm not sure if Salome didn't have another infant after 'Kipenzi' as well?

So, yes. 'Kipenzi' is a genetically valuable male.

At one stage there were 3 'Salomes' in the EEP Gorilla population- now there's only one- at Bristol.

Unfortunately only a couple show the indoor area and even then you can't see how bare it is (unless its been upgraded,of course) I would still like to see some recent photos of it- to prove or disprove my point.

Okay, it looks like the winner of our gorilla discussion is Pertinax. I was confusing Sally with another female, Amani.

Hello Toddy,

Aim a bit curious about the Douroucoulis kept in Randers Regnskov Tropical Zoo, you list them as Aotus lemurinus but on ISIS they are kept as Aotus azarai boliviensis. Have they kept Aotus azarai or are the ISIS records incorrect?

There is also 1 Ateles belzebuth hybridus listed for Copenhagen Zoo on ISIS, is that also incorrect?

Do you happen to know anything about the Saguinus fuscicollis kept in Odsherreds Zoo? numbers and where they come from? perhaps also which subspecies they belongs to?

Sorry if I have to many questions for you

Hi sebbe67

No, that's not to many questions. Some of them are a bit hard maybe, but I will answer as best i can

The douroucoulis at Randers has got me jiggered . I'm not sure where I have the Aotus lemurinus from, but something must be wrong, either at Randers' own website or on ISIS. It says that they keep 1.0.4 Aotus azarai boliviensis, but on their own website, the classify them as Aotus trivirgatus. I am going to visit Randers on Febuary 13th (Wednesday), so I will look into it then. BTW, does anyone from ZooBeat have any special photo requests from Randers Regnskov? Cause now is your chance . Here is also a link to some photos from Randers.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that the Ateles belzebuth hybridus in Copenhagen must be a mistake. We currently keep 0.2 Ateles geoffroyi in the enclosure.

Odsherreds Zoo is pretty bad at handing out information the zoo-fans, so I don't have much info on their animals. I think they keep 2 or 3 Saguinus fuscicollis, but I don't know the subspecies. As they are a minizoo, they most likely got them from a private breeder or another minizoo not registered on ISIS.

I hope this helps . And I will look into the douroucoulis and spider monkeys when I get the chance.

Okay, I will try to get some good manatee shots . I actually don't think that they keep any hornbills, pheasants or storks, but if I see some interesting birds, I will take some photos, and let you bird-fans decide if they are anything special . I'm still taking photo orders.
