Sumatran rhino enclosure.
Old 08-02-2008

Toddy- on a historic note... is the enclosure the Sumatran Rhino 'Subur' once occupied at Copenhagen still in existence? If so, has it been altered and what species does it hold now?

Actually, I haven't been able to find out where Subur used to live . My guess would be either the camel house (still in use) or the current elephant house. I do know Suburs present location however, the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen .

Her exhibit had a dry moat with a rock wall as the moats face when looking into the exhibit from the public pathway

Subur's enclosure

Okay, so I just spent the last hour researching this, and I think I know the answer. Subur used to live in the old "vinterhouse", originally built to house cold-sensitive animals during winter. In Suburs time, it would have been occupied by her and malayan tapirs. The house does not exist anymore, it was demolished in 2003, but the outdoor enclosures still do. Luckily, I had already uploaded a picture of it in the gallery. It now houses malayan tapirs. As you can see, it can be split in to. My guess is that Subur used the enclosure to the left. From historical photos, this seems about right. Just imagine the enclosure a bit less green . Also, it was recently renovated. Notice the dry moat with little rock walls in the right of the picture. This was my most important clue, as this moat is still used around most of the enclosure.

Hope this helps

The douroucoulis at Randers has got me jiggered . I'm not sure where I have the Aotus lemurinus from, but something must be wrong, either at Randers' own website or on ISIS. It says that they keep 1.0.4 Aotus azarai boliviensis, but on their own website, the classify them as Aotus trivirgatus. I am going to visit Randers on Febuary 13th (Wednesday), so I will look into it then. BTW, does anyone from ZooBeat have any special photo requests from Randers Regnskov? Cause now is your chance . Here is also a link to some photos from Randers.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that the Ateles belzebuth hybridus in Copenhagen must be a mistake. We currently keep 0.2 Ateles geoffroyi in the enclosure.

Odsherreds Zoo is pretty bad at handing out information the zoo-fans, so I don't have much info on their animals. I think they keep 2 or 3 Saguinus fuscicollis, but I don't know the subspecies. As they are a minizoo, they most likely got them from a private breeder or another minizoo not registered on ISIS.

I hope this helps . And I will look into the douroucoulis and spider monkeys when I get the chance.
Thanks Toddy,

Yes that surely helped me, will be interresting to see what you will manage to find out about the Aotus kept at Randers.

First ever baby rhino in Knuthenborg killed
Old 10-02-2008

It was with great joy that Knuthenborg Safaripark this summer announced that one of their female white rhinoes was pregnant. The female Bertha is one of the 2.2 white rhinoes that live on the savannah in Knuthenborg, and all of them are born in the wild in South Africa.

Sadly, her litlle calf only survived 12 hours after being born on Febuary 8th, 2008. Bertha was a first time mother, and accidently crushed her own calf. There was nothing wrong with her maternal instincts however, she loved her calf.

This was Knuthenborg Safari's first rhino birth, and dispite this sad event, they are trying their best efforts to get their rhinoes to breed again. Hopefully this time with a happy ending.

Toddy,

I have another question about primates in danish zoos for you. Do you happen to know anything about the Callithrix penicillata and Cercocebus torquatus kept in Skærup Zoo?

Thanks

Again with the questions! . No seriously, it's nice to see that you take an interest in the danish zoos. Keep asking .

I know that Skærup Zoo keeps two groups black-eared marmosets (callithrix penicillata) with about 7 members in each. I don't know about the red-capped mangabey (cercocebus torquatus) though. I'm not not even sure that they keep these anymore. I am expecting a copy of their species-list any day now, so I will post here when I know something.

I have now made a list of things I have promised to check for you members here at ZooBeat, so I don't forget some of them. I will let you know when I find out anything about the mangabeys. Also, I am going to ask the guides and keepers in Randers Regnskov this wednesday about the douroucoulis.

I read some story in Danish on the website of Knuthenborg Safari Park the other day. Could not quite make out, but believed that a mating occurred prior to the expected birth. Can you translate for us?

So sad that the female crushed her calf. I put it down to inexperience. I hope she will quickly reacquire her composure and breed to the male Oskar. Also, her companion too ..... Perhaps 2 calves in the next year or so.

I am asuming that this is the page you are referring to?
If so, this is the message they sent out when they discovered that Bertha was pregnant, so what it bassicly says, is that they expect a rhino baby around January. Then there is some alround info on rhinos in the EEP.
If this wasn't the page you meant, then post a link, and I will take a look at it. BTW, they have not updated Knuthenborg's website after the death of the rhino calf. I got the news through a group of zoo keepers.

My first aardvark-encounter was with Maxima in Randers Regnskov. She was born in Arnhem, and arrived in Randers sometime around 2001/2002.
Maxima the aardvark from Randers Regnskov (born in Arnhem) and Henriette the manatee from Odense Zoo (born in Amsterdam) are my two favourite animals of all time

BTW Sebbe67, another danish zoo-enthusiast and good friend of mine is going to Odsherreds Zoo and meet the owner in two weeks time. He has promised to take the question about the saguinus fuscicollis with him as well, so you will get an answer then

According to the site La Barben (France), the elephant Sandrine has moved to Denmark. Is here someone who knows more?
Can it be Givskud ?

Yes, I think so. Givskud has been talking about getting another female for their small herd. Besides, the only other place in Denmark we have Asian elephants are in Copenhagen, and I know for sure that it's not there.

I just got home from seeing the Kattegatcentre and Randers Regnskov. You can expect pictures and stories tommorrow

What is the score with elephant management at Givskud? What is their intention now after unsuccessfully trying to establish a breeding group for years? Will they maintain an all female grouping and provide safe house for elderly matrons?

What actually happened with this death cycle in late 2004 (2 females dying same day)? The death of Bons Ree at 59 in 2007 was no surprise (age-related)!!!
