I don't have much info on the elephants in Givskud i'm affraid. but I don't think a breeding group is part of their plans at the moment. Givskud Zoo has had lots of problems with their elephants. The zoo's philosophy is about the animals staying "wild", so the elephants have recived no training at all. This causes serious problems when managing them regarding simple things like pedicure and stuff. They often have to call in for help from Copenhagen or Aalborg.

Photos and updates
Old 15-02-2008

Okay, so I'm back from my trip, and here are all the photos I have promised you. They are available on my gallery site; ZooPhotos

The first photo collection is from Kattegatcentret. Kattegatcentret is one of the biggest aquariums in Denmark, and focuses mainly on sharks. I spent about 1 1/2 hours there, and have published 14 pictures for you to enjoy. Read a review from Kattegatcentret here.

The second collection is from Randers Regnskov Tropical Zoo, and contains 79 photos. I spent 7 hours there, and had a great time . I got to see their new exhibition "Life in a Log", with leaf-cutter ants and yellow armadillos. I also saw the young bush dog puppies on display outside the enclosure. Randers Regnskov takes the puppies out twice a day, to get them used to public attention and being handled by the keepers. Naturally, you are not allowed to touch them. I have taken many photos of enclosures and ares inside the domes, so people that have never been there can get a sense of why it is such a great zoo. Read a review of Randers Regnskov here.

The last collection was taken yesterday in Copenhagen Zoo. It features 8 photos from the construction of the new Elephant House. Read a review of Copenhagen Zoo here.

Sebbe67: I took your question about the douroucoulis to the guides in the South American dome. I would like to compliment the guides in Randers Regnskov for their great helpfullness. They didn't know about the douroucolis, so they called someone who did, and put me on the phone with him. He told me that the one they have in Randers is in fact Aotus azarai boliviensis. When they got them they believed that they were Aotus trivirgatus, so their website is just outdated on this point, as it still says so.

Writhedhornbill:I took as many manatee photos as I could, and also one of their enclosure.

jwer: Sorry, but I got no good aardvark photos this time. They live in a NightZoo and if they move around to much, as they did this time, they are just impossible to photograph. The only decent photo I have is this.

No problem Sebbe67. We zoo-fans have to help each other out

BTW, I always asumed you were more of a bird-fanatic than a monkey-fan?

Yeah, aim more into birds now, but that has not always been the case, my interested in birds first started about 10 years ago, before that I found birds to be increadibly boring. That changed when I travelled to New Guinea to study a introduced population of macaques.

Aim a educated primatologist and has spent most of my professional life working with primates. Almost to the point that I now find primates to be boring

I have another monkey question

1 female is listed for Nykoebing Falster Zoo on ISIS, I recall reading somewhere at the net about a male from this zoo being transfered to a zoo in Poland or Czech Republic?

What do you know about these?

I asume you are talking about the Diana monkeys (Cercopithecus diana). That female has been listed there for a very long time, and must be a mistake. Their last Diana monkey was a male, Tino, and he moved to Poland in 2005 (I think it was to Warsaw). I have a few pictures of Tino from when i first visited the park in 2005, right before he left.

Updates
Old 20-02-2008

Here are the latest updates from the danish zoos:

In the morning on febuary 15th, a pair of new reticulated giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) arrived in Copenhagen Zoo. The two giraffes are both females named Lien og Jeanet, and both come from Artis Amsterdam. They will be part of the new breeding group of pure reticulated giraffes that Copenhagen Zoo is establishing. With the arrival of the two new females, Copenhagen now holds 2.3 reticulated giraffes, with one of the males being a calf born in June 2007. Copenhagen Zoo has since 1939 raised 61 reticulated giraffes.

Safari Zoo Park Lintrup in southern Jutland has just announced it's 2008 news. In addition to the endangered przewalski's wild horses (Equus caballus przewalskii), Safari Zoo Park Lintrup will also be the home of the only spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) in Scandinavia.

More updates
Old 11-03-2008

The elephants in Copenhagen Zoo will move from the old elephant house to the new on tuesday the 11th March. The house opens on June 12th. Here is a link to my newest photo-collection from Copenhagen Zoo, with the very last photos of elephants in their old house. The house opened in 1914, and has held elephants ever since.

Some sad news: The old babirusa male in Copenhagen died in late 2007. He was the last remaning babirusa in Scandinavia, and will be missed. He was made famous when he fathered the three world-famous babirus/domestic pig hybrids. This winter we also lost our male gibbon.

Some good news: The hammerkops in the Hippo House have built a gigantic nest just below the roof. See a picture of the nest here. There is also a good chance that one or both of the female hippos are pregnant, and we could expect a young hippo as soon as June/July.

Here is also a small list of the new enclosures opening in the danish zoos this year:

? - Wisent, Randers Regnskov Tropical Zoo (Vorup Enge).
? - Onager, Ree Park - Ebeltoft Safari.
March - Asian snaketemple (walkthrough enclosure), Randers Regnskov Tropical Zoo.
May - Tiger enclosure, Odense Zoo
June - Elephant House, Copenhagen Zoo.
June - Red panda enclosure, Copenhagen Zoo.
Summer - Giraffe-stable, Ree Park - Ebeltoft Safari.

Kobenhavn Zoo has over recent decades always exhibited pure-bred reticulated giraffe. Even the current breeding group is pure-bred reticulateds. Can you tell us the names, sex and dates of birth of the current breeding group (save for the new imports).

1.0 breeder (d.of.b.? at ?)
0.1 breeder (d. of b.? at ?)
1.0 calf (b. ?/2007 at Kobenhavn)

*****

Re the Ebeltoft onager exhibit. I believe they currently have just 1.0 Persian onager Equus onager onager. Does the erection of a new exhibit for this species imply that they are acquiring more individuals? If so, do you know from where? Will they be a bachelor male herd or an intended breeding group?

Re onagers in Denmark in general:
Can you tell me the origins of all individuals kept in Denmark?
Ebeltoft 1.0: 1.0 (b. ? at ?)
Knuthenborg 1.2: 1.0 (b. ? at ? - breeder), 0.1 (b. ? at ? - breeder), 0.1 (b. ?/2007 at Knuthenborg)

Thanx for the extra info.

Hi jelle

Regarding the giraffes in Copenhagen, this is all I know:

1.0 Oliver
0.1 Camilla
1.0 calf (15. 6/2007 at Kobenhavn)
0.2 Lien and Jeanet from Artis

And I know that the breeding bulls in Frankfurt Zoo and Nürnberg Zoo are also from Copenhagen.

Charly (27. 5/1995 in Copenhagen) - Nürnberg Zoo
Hatari (16. 2/1999 in Copenhagen) - Frankfurt Zoo

About the onagers...

Knuthenborg have had theirs for a long time, and I don't know where they got them from.

Ree Park - Ebeltoft Safari currently keeps
1.0 Equus onager and
1.0 Equus onager onager.

I don't know much about these either, since their exhibit is brand new, and due to open this spring. I think that they will start with a bachelor group, and then aquire some females when possible.

I'm sorry that I can't give you any more detailed information? If you are very interested in knowing the details about these and other animals, I could send som e-mails to the zoos?

Toddy,

Re: onagers at Knuthenborg and Ebeltoft: your offer would be ever so nice! Much obliged!

Regarding Aalborg Zoo. They keep large groups of African ungulates and are particularly keen on addax and scimitar horned oryx.

Sometime ago the zoo said farewell to its last white rhinos? Do they plan on bringing any rhinos back in the future?

What plans does Aalborg Zoo have for its zoo? Do they have a masterplan available?

Jelle
