1.1 white rhinos have been exported from Givskud.
1.0 Max was transferred to a new collection in Boissiere du Dore and 0.1 Zola was sent to Cabarceno Safari Park.

Also, some pretty high profile giraffe movements ... :D

I have been somewhat confused by the place's name for 20 years and I'm sure Toddy will put it straight for me, once and for all, like he usually does! :D I know it is offically called Givskud Zoo but is it in or near a town called Give? Unfortunately I've never been there...

The correct name is Givskud Zoo sometimes also known as "The Lionpark" or to use its full name:The Lionpark - Givskud Zoo. Give is a town some distance away from the zoo. The zoo is located in Givskud.

Givskud Zoo has apparently had a great season in 2011 with a total of 325.000. That is 16 % better than last season. Hopefully more Danish zoos will have had better seasons than last year which was very bad for the Danish zoos.

Also, Givskud Zoo has recently started constructing a new exhibit for their next "star species"; giant otters. Their exhibit was originally planned for 2011 but will open in the spring 2012 instead.

It's a safari park with plenty of space. Exhibits generally range from just above average to world class. But they only have about 80 species in their 60 hectare (150 acre). They own twice that space. Three of the main points in the plans involve expanding into unused space, making existing exhibits even better (including hiding fencing in the few exhibits where it is obvious today) and making exhibits more acessible to people without motorized vehicles. Today much of the zoo can only be fully seen in car or zoo bus/train.

Toddys photos provide good illustrations of many of their exhibits. Examples (none show entire exhibit)

By the way the plans involve a lot of pedal powered vehicles (land, water and cable cars) and the zoo will change name to Zootopia when first part is finished. First part with the ring shaped entrance building is supposed to be ready for their 50 year anniversary in 2019. In addition to hiding all fencing they will also attempt to hide indoor space for the animals by vegetation, building into hills, etc. Leaving the entrace as the only obviously visible building. But let's wait and see how much of the plan end up being realised. Long term master plans for zoos rarely end up exactly as envisioned

Givskud will be going out of Chimpanzees over the next few months to focus on Gorillas: The remaining chimps will moved on over the coming winter and following Spring. Two will go to Arnhem, two more to Copenhagen, one to Kristiansand in Norway before the last two are shipped to Taronga Zoo next year

In 1987 opened GIVSKUD Zoo an ultramodern plant for chimps. Since the requirements for animal enclosures changed and we have decided to no longer have the chimpanzees. look at the reasons for the decision and what is going to happen with the animals.
In 1987 opened the largest and most inno vative chimpanzee facilities in Denmark ever. At that time, the private foundation Safari Park only existed for four years following the acquisition of Lion Park. It had been some tough economic year with no room for major renewals and based on historically low visitor numbers. Therefore it was decided to focus on a new large animal facility.

    New plant
The choice fell on chimpanzees. GIVSKUD ZOO already had two chimpanzees in a traditional cage facility built just four years earlier. Inspired by the existing chimpanzee facilities in Arnhem and Apeldom in Holland, it was decided to build a new and modern plant for chimps. A plant that would be spectacular at both national and international level. There was designed a 2500 m 2 large new outdoor facilities with moat and two large islands. To this day it is still the largest facility for chimpanzees in Denmark. Stable plant was also very advanced and the first building in GIVSKUD ZOO which was designed by an architect.

    Hard to get animals
Back then in the mid 80s, it was very difficult to get chimpanzees, and there existed no breeding cooperation that could identify individuals for the new plant. We did however manage to get another 2 males and 3 females from other zoos around Europe. It was all chimpanzees who either had a difficult behavior or which did not fit into the social groups they were a part of.

    Sentenced to death project?
The project to put our original two chimpanzees along with the five new, was doomed to failure of all chimpanzee experts. That did, however, do not - the process rather perfectly. Perhaps because all the animals came from situations where it had not worked, and because they were all put together at one time a new strange place. The group found very quickly a stable social structure outside the big fights. And it was actually a few of the animals that had had at least confident that bound flock together in a natural and efficient way.

    Chimpanzee in water
The biggest drama came just before the opening, when the chimpanzee group were presented to the large outdoor facilities. Several of the animals were not used to dig water, and it resulted also in the new Alpha Sam with a tremendous splash jumped into the water and disappeared below the surface. A quick-witted zookeeper from Hannover quickly grabbed a large branch and began to rummage in the water, where Sam had disappeared. Suddenly there was a "bite", and Sam got panicky climbing up the branch. In this way he saved their lives, but came the so unfortunately up on the audience side. Still panicked, he stood for a moment and shook the water off himself, and then he jumped straight into the arms of our former technical manager, Kaj Rauff. This could then, without problems, carry the 80 kg heavy hanchimpanse back in buranlægget in the barn. It was a bad surprise for everyone, but it ended up fortunate and chimpanzee facility could open with great festivity to the season start in 1987.

    The animals thrive
After working chimpanzee facility and group optimally for years. Animals that were previously unable to care for their offspring, appeared now to be perfect parents, and there was born a number of infant chimpanzees. Every new day was greeted with screams and yell and fuss, as he or she does in the chimpanzee world. Several behavioral studies were performed on chimpanzee group, and it turned out, among other things, that it is not leading male who was the father of the pups. Rather, it was the second-ranking male - also a natural phenomenon in chimpanzees.

    Breeding Cooperation in time
In the early 00s, however, the two things that became crucial to the chimpanzees in GIVSKUD ZOO. First of all, we opened in 2000, one of the world's largest plant for the gorillas. Then you started the first European breeding cooperation for West African chimpanzee in 2003, and we signed up of course immediately into. Master Registrar and Coordinator is Frands Carlsen from Copenhagen Zoo. Unfortunately, it turns quickly by genetic testing, only two of our chimpanzees are pure West African chimpanzees. The others are either Central or crosses.

    Gorillas and chimpanzees
This meant that GIVSKUD ZOO got two big dilemmas in relation to our team of chimpanzees. First of all, we had just made the largest investment ever in the large modern facility for gorillas. Should the chimpanzee facility upgraded to the same modern standard, it would require an even greater investment. Very simply speaking, it is nemlignoget more demanding to give chimps a rich life in captivity than gorillas. It was also the breeding program strategy that chimpanzee group should split up the tasks each subspecies in the correct contexts in other plants. Therefore, we decided to focus on the gorilla, which is the great ape GIVSKUD ZOO is known to have. In our master plan from 2004 suggest, therefore, that GIVSKUD ZOO in the long term has not chimpanzees.

    The group split up
The situation in the 00s, however, was completely different from when we were desperately looking for chimpanzees back in the 80s. With the breeding program running, the division of the population of sub-species and a large and healthy population of chimpanzees in Europe was suddenly very difficult to place the animals elsewhere. Yet it is now managed: After 10 years of hard work to get the puzzle to go up, it has been possible to distribute GIVSKUD ZOO's group of chimpanzees to other sites in one place. Two of the animals to Copenhagen Zoo, the two must Arnhem Zoo in the Netherlands, two going to Taronga Zoo in Australia and the last one, to the Wildlife Park in Kristiansand, Norway. Movement is going to take place in the winter of 2014, perhaps in the spring of 2015. It is a rather complicated task to move a chimpanzee, and it requires a lot of preparation to conduct the transport and the subsequent introduction to a new group. In this case, there is even talk of moving animals to different locations.

    Wistful day
There is no doubt that when the sid first chimpanzee leave GIVSKUD ZOO, it will be a strange melancholy day. Chimpanzees have been important in GIVSKUD zoo for more than 30 years. It will also be a quiet day. GIVSKUD Zoo and Safari entire city will no longer resound with the excited or angry chimpansehyl that have rung in the area for so many years.

    New species
However, it would also mean mu equality for new development. The old chimpansehus and the adjacent outdoor facilities still have a very high quality. With a modest modernization can be adapted to future plans we have for the development of the new Zootopia concept. Which species moving into the chimpanzee facility is pending. However, there is a high probability that it will be a somewhat smaller monkey and certainly an animal from Asia. Chimpanzee The facility is located in the part of the park, which Zootopia becomes our Asian region.

Interesting - I wonder how the Chimps will feel all going different directions?

The new blood for Taronga sounds good though, and the chimps will be moving somewhere where they can be out year-round. I feel a bit sorry for the ones going to Copenhagen though, that enclosure is surely a lot smaller for them.

2 giant otters born. To give them peace this also means the otter house is closed to the general public for a period where they only will be visible on cam.

Anyone any idea whether some of the chimpanzees have already been relocated as reported in the news item on the website?
