I spent my Sunday afternoon in Copenhagen Zoo and had a very good time.

Just in case anybody is interested, I managed to get an answer to a question that I have earlier raised here on the forum and one that I have thought about a lot. It concerns the new elephant exhibit and my question is (was) whether the two male elephants also will get access to the larger outdoor area normally used by the herd.

A very nice zoo keeper told me that this is the case. It has only happened a few times so far, but that is because of technical problems with the massive gates separating the two enclusures. When they are sorted out, big old guy Chiang Mei and youngster Tonsak will indeed be let out into the bigger enclosure and enjoy the pleasures of the big pool etc. (It was such a joy to see one of the young females today, when it was actually pretty damn cold, still finding great pleaure in throwing herself into the pool, get totally submerged by the water and then take a mud bath afterwards - only to throw herself into the pool again!).

It was such a relief for me to hear this, as I otherwise would have thought that this exhibit - that indeed is such an improvement for the herd - would only have meant a minor improvement for the two males. (The regular outdoor enclosure for the males is the weak link of this exhibit.)
