this bird was labelled as \'goshawk Accipiter trivirgatus\'. That is the binomen of the crested goshawk, which is what I therefore noted it down as, but now looking at the photos it appears to instead be the grey-faced buzzard. (Crested goshawks have a black-streaked breast, do not have bright yellow eyes or the white on the forepart of the underwing as seen here, and of course they have a crest on the back of the head)

It looks like a typical crested goshawk to me and very unlike a grey-faced buzzard which have a much more buzzard-like look and more elongate orange beak. The crest often isn't all that distinct in the crested goshawk, wing lining varies from buff to white, adults have orange or yellow eyes and very dark brown (looks almost black) or orange-rufous breast streaks. Some variation is geographical but females tend to have darker chest markings than males. Photos of some variants at Oriental Bird Club Image Database:Accipiter trivirgatus

If you use the book A Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and Bali it isn't very good on raptors. It caused confusion on my Borneo visit but another trip participant had scans of plates and text from Raptors of the World and Birds of Southeast Asia that are better.

hmm, you are probably quite correct. I don't have any experience with the two species in life, and I wasn't entirely happy with grey-faced buzzard anyway. The MacKinnon field-guide really is pretty bad in some areas, especially as you say raptors, and I was basically trying to shoe-horn the photo into an ID from the book. Still, its not as un-user-friendly as the Wallacea field-guide by Coates et al!
