Dresden Zoo - Old Cat House
Old 23-11-2008

The old Big Cat House in Dresden Zoo, Germany. During my visit in 2008 it housed a single lion and some smaller cats. Next to it is a newer exhibit for lions.

Do you know what the zoo is planning to do with the building?

Yeah, they broke down half of the bulding for the new (but still not really nice) lion-exhibit. For no good reason you can't go on the side with the fishing-cat and musang. Iīm afraid they'll broke down soon the whole house

Thanks God they broke it down. The Zoos are not museums for old and useless animal builngs,as long as animals have to live their whole life( in some cases, that can be al ong, long time) in the zoo and vistors come to the zoo just for a few hours....

Its possible to use old animal houses for keeping animals in it, there are many examples for that, but not this old and ugly lion house...The time of that house is over since many years....

the old cat house is now holding their aquarium.... i was inside there are many tankes of fishes. there are some small cats still but its not realy in use

about the old buildings, i am sorry but i dont agree with zebraduiker, some of the old building are amazing, i think it holds the history of zoo and its important to have them.
in alot of the old zoos there are building that they can't destroy beacuse those are historical buildings , so they r doing other things with them.

I like old zoo buildings too, but if is not possible to keep animals inside any longer, so they have to stop the keeping of animals in that houses and uses them for other things, so the old lion house at the toledo Zoo is now a restaurant.

I reapeat, Zoos are places where animals have to live, and not museums for old Zoo buildings ! A few Zoo have done it to rstore old animal houses and rebuild them into very good animal houses, so I like it,what the Zoo Wroclaw has done out of his old Moneky House, which is more than 100 years old and it is better than many, many new monkey houses I've seen....

Another Example is the Egytian temple at the Antwerp Zoo, its a very ncie building, but it is not good anylonger for keeping any big animals in it, so I'm very lucky with their correct decision to stop the animal keeping in that old house ! It would be good if the Budapest zoo would do the same with its elephant house. Its a wonderful buildning, but not for the animals, and it is not possible to rebuild it into a modern and good elephant house. So why they do not make a zoo museum or a restaurant out of this house ?

In general I have to say that I agree with Zebraduikerīs view towards old zoo buildings. Yes, many of them may be very interesting from an architectural point of view, but if they no longer can provide a good enviroment for the animals, they have to be transformed into something else or be torned down. I happen to be very interested in architecture, but I am MUCH more interested in animal welfare and would hate to see it being compromised because of architectural history considerations.

I agree with Zebraduiker and another good example is the lion house at the Bronx Zoo.
