Frankfurt Zoo - Seal Cliffs
Old 07-01-2008

The new cliffs and pools for the sea lions and seals at Frankfurt Zoo. The enclosure on the picture is for the sea lions. The seals' pool is situated behind this one. Both species can be viewed underwater.

Both the land and the water areas are much larger than the average pinniped habitat, and so overall it appears to be a top-notch exhibit.

Looks nice and spacious indeed! But then I - being the ever worrying non-specialist, mainly occupied by animal welfare at zoos - would like to ask a question:

I have hardly ever seen a sea mammal zoo enclosure with soft substrate - only these fake rocks all over again. Donīt seals etc in the wild now and then like to rest on sand or grass? I donīt know, I am only asking.

As far as my knowledge goes fur seals live on rocky beaches in the wild

The south-african fur-seals in Frankfurt have two big sand pools in the exhibit. The Seal cliffs are not a new exhibit, its just a renovation of the odlere xhibit, whichw as opend in 1939. What they have done is to make the landpart a little big bigger, but they couldn't make bigger parts of sand, because they would become to close to the water. And the water pool is now almost 4 meters deep, the old pool was just 1 and half meters deep....

Visitors can see the fur-seals and the seals underwater.
