Okapi Sofie and young Malayan tapir Qadira both died this week at Antwerp Zoo.

    News source (in Dutch):
Zoo rouwt om okapi Sofie (24) | HLN Antwerpen

Okapi Sofie was the oldest okapi in Europe at 24. She was old, but still in relatively good condition and her death seems to have come as a bit of a surprise.

Young tapir Qadira, born earlier this year and only 5 months old, was unexpectedly found dead in the stable. She seemed to have been doing well in the days before her death and her death leaves the zoo with a mystery. An investigation into her cause of death has been started. University of Antwerp is assisting in performing necropsy and tissue analysis.

On a happier note: two white-crested turaco chicks hatched at Antwerp Zoo. Unfortunately the mother didn't take good care of them, so they're being hand-raised by keepers in the bird house nursery (where visitors can see them). Video and news source at Antwerp Zoo Facebook page (in Dutch):

The row of A-J aviaries outside the birdhouse has been transformed into 3 large aviaries in the same style as the flamingo-pinguin bird section.

1st South America : red cardinal, white-throated tucan, guira cockoo, grey-winged trumpeter and in future crested oropendola

2nd Africa : green woodhoepoe, speckled mousebird, yellow-necked spurfowl, violet-backed starling, golden-breasted starling, turaco (musophaga violacea, Tauraco leucolophus, Tauraco persa buffoni, Tauraco schalowi and Gallirex porphyreolophus) and Vieillot's black weaver.

3rd Europe : european hoopoe, red-legged partrige, eurasian oystercatcher, goldfinch, stone-curlew and in future also european bee-eater

Does anyone know anything about the 'Red-billed Toucan' in the large aviaries outside the bird house?

Looking at my pictures, it looks more like Ramphastos cuvieri inca rather than Ramphastos tucanus to me. I realise that the two species can be considered conspecific but even so, it looks like subspecies inca?

(Note: Zootierliste lists Ramphastos tucanus inca for Antwerp)

On Ja. 6 keepers found Jaguar-female Zöe dead in cage. Zöe was born on Dec. 8 1998 at Zoo Berlin and came 1999 to Antwerp, together with her sister Zora, which is still living at Antwerp.

September last year it had its 50th birthday, now he died. Heini, Antwerps male Hippo was one of the oldest Hippos in Europe. He was born at Zürich Zoo and came 2002 from a Czech zoo to Antwerp. The breeding female Hermien and their daughter Imani still are at Antwerp.

Hopefully they will get a completely unrelated male now as Hermann and Hein were already the product of inbreeding and they were related so Imani does not have the most favourable genetic make up.
