Seems that gorilla female with the name Kiki, died in Antwerpen zoo today (I think language new is on Dutch). Probably as I read, she suffered from epilepsia (Dutch/Belgian zoochatters should confirm this) : Kiki heeft ons verlaten | ZOO Antwerpen
A real shame, but she will at last get her rest. She had quite an unfortunate life to begin with, so it was probably for the best. Aaaand that leaves the group at 3 individuals, from what was at the beginning of the year 5. The zoo has seen three gorilla deaths already this year; a crying shame. At least Kiki can join Kumba and Victoria. Rest in peace little one.
Suffering from well-advanced epilepsy (a condition acquired at birth), collapsed and attacked by dominant silverback and suffering injuries to arm with consequent need for amputation. She seemed to be recovering from the op and was in contact with the older female Amohoro, but in the last week her health took a definite turn for the worst. In the end she just stopped breathing. I suggest people refrain from making wordings like "crying shame" at recent gorilla deaths at Antwerpen Zoo, best of all if you are not party to the full facts. Both other gorillas had reached a well advanced age when passing on. On the whole in fact the Zoo has had quite a good record of gorilla husbandry and the only zoo ever to have had a eastern lowland gorilla breeding group .. (which sadly when finally established lacked a new male for the greater part to make the group grow in numbers). At the moment the zoo staff remain in shock. I do hope that when this has blown over and been laid to rest that the new gorilla group under Matadi may prosper and get 1 or 2 more females, so they can perpetuate a breeding group (in the new gorilla outdoor exhibit).
As do I, meant no offence in any way. It's just sad that they've lost three in the space of one year is all
If you write ' a crying shame' then at least that looked like an offence. Two gorilla's died of age, another after a series of incidents which where only avoidable by continually isolating this individual (which belongs to a highly sociable species).
Yes, I am aware of this, and have already apologised. It's merely sad, as it would be for any zoo, that most of the group they started with at the beginning of the year have passed away, and all in such a (relatively) small timeframe.
