My trip to Antwerp
Old 10-03-2008

One tuesday, I'll be setting of for France, on the school exchange. I've asked my french partner to take me to a zoo. First we talked about Parc Paradisio, but that does not open until the 22nd of March. Then My french partner suggested Antwerp zoo. So I agreed eagerly!

Does antwerp still keep wattled curassows? I haven't seen these birds before, and I'd like to know whether Antwerp still keeps them.

Do they still keep wattled guans?

Any other rare birds kept here?

Thanks!

Hi

I would like to help you but I don't think the Antwerp Zoo has them anymore. I'm not sure, maybe they are in Planckendael, the other animal park. I should know the name in Dutch but I can't find it.

Here you can see a link but I don't know if it's up to date... Maybe you'll be pleasant surprised when you're there .

Zoo Antwerpen

Anyway, please post your pictures when you're back .

Does that go for both species Marc? (Wattled Guans and Wattled Curassows?)

Does Antwerp still have the Sea otters?

Thanks!

Antwerp's sea otter male is currently in Rotterdam, where he wil hopefully breed with the two females there. Not sure when he gets back?

@ Writhedhornbill: yes I think it's for both species but I'm not sure. Birds are not my speciality .

Chuulugi the sea otter will come back this month. I hope his stay in Rotterdam was succesful, not like the other times. We will see..

That's him in Antwerp :

Enjoy your visit, Can you take a few photos of the female eastern lowland gorillas(both) especially Amohoro- the possible 'mountain' gorilla and then post them up. ?

I really suck in remembering english bird-names If a watteld guan is a Aburria aburri, than yes, they still have those (i have a pic somewhere here: Benelux Zoos @ Fotopic.Net )

Other rare birds... A lot. A large part of the collection in antwerp is bird. I do know that the zoo was one of the first to keep Corythaeola cristata, and they have quite a number of those. (and offcourse the Afropavo congensis)

Also don't forget to visit the old bird building with the 'famous' Antwerp cage system. Birds are only seperate from public with a light system. The cages are clear but where the visitors are it's dark and birds don't come over there. Only little birds are there .
