Auckland Zoo Map 1996

Auckland Zoo Map 1996 This map was printed just as work on the Pridelands exhibit was begining. The central area marked "new exhibit development" was closed off and the Prideland's service area was built here. This allowed species such as giraffe to be hold off-display while their exhibit was extensively modified. Changes in the past year include the addition of Ring-tailed Lemurs, and the move of the bats from over by the elephant to the flight aviary on the opposite side of the zoo. Now lost species here include Jaguars, held in a small, dark cage which was probably the worst exhibit at this time.

What was in the aquarium? Did it have large sharks in it like the picture there implies? From looking at the modern map it looks like that area is now where the native New Zealand complex is now?

      When did the chimps leave?

@DavidBrown - I visited Auckland Zoo for the first time in 1995 (the year before this map). The aquarium was a small mock-rock-walled one, no sharks. I remember Archer Fish, African cichlids, various home aquarium fish (e.g. Angelfish, Neon Tetras, etc), and amongst the non-fish a Hellbender and a Bloodsucker (Asian Garden Lizard).

Most of the Chimps which were at Auckland went to Hamilton Zoo in 2004. These were descended from the old "tea-party chimps" imported from London Zoo in 1959 and two imported from Taronga Zoo in 1982. The last Chimp at Auckland was Janie who died in 2013 - she was the last survivor of four tea-party chimps imported from London Zoo in 1956.

For the Orangutans, three were exported to the USA in 2015, and the remaining three went to Orana Park in 2017.

I wonder whether any of the visitors were disappointed to find that the zoo didn't have toucans?
