Auckland Zoo Map 1997

Auckland Zoo Map 1997 This is the first map to show the new Pridelands precinct. The upgraded giraffe enclosure now held giraffe and zebra, and was accessible to Springbok, who could also access the adjoining new Rhino enclosure. The new Lion enclosure replaced the original pit which had been used since 1922. Ostrich were added and occupied the old Rhino enclosure. Note that Flamingoes did not arrive until September 2001. This map also labels a number of species absent from previous maps, but most of these (servals, baboons, swans) were certainly not new arrivals, just the result of a more detailed map.

Which species of monkey were held next to the servals?

I'm not 100% sure, but this was a row of reasonably large cages, and I suspect that in 1997 they held only a couple of species, probably Common Squirrel Monkeys, Pig-tailed Macaques and possibly some Chacma Baboons that weren't kept with the main group next to the Jaguar.

The last two squirrel monkeys were sent to Pouakai in March 2000, but there are still monkeys shown in this spot until September 2001, which I presume were the macaques.

Monkeys held here in 1992 would have been: Common Squirrel Monkeys, Black-capped Capuchins, Pig-tailed Macaques, Diana Monkeys and Black & White Ruffed Lemurs. I'm not sure when these species were last held at the zoo (except the squirrels). I think the Dianas would have died out first, and assume the Capuchins and Lemurs went to Hamilton around 1993-95. The macaques presumably dwindled and eventually went to Pouakai (or somewhere else?).
