Auckland Zoo Map 1999

Auckland Zoo Map 1999 A new map design, which is more schematic, and shows the new Hippo River development, featuring Hippos and Baboons. This was likely printed for Hippo River's opening, as it does not include the old hippo exhibit, which was subsequently put back in use after the elderly hippo Snorkel was again seperated from the other two animals to prevent fighting. Other developments include the arrival of Nisha, a Sumatran Tiger which took up residence in the old Lion pit, the addition of Ostrich to the giraffe enclosure, the transfer of Llama to the old Camel paddock following Larry's demise and the renovation of the old Baboon and Jaguar cages for Asiatic Golden Cats. Species now lost from the collection include the wombat.

ugh, that's a nasty design. It looks like a board-game. That would almost make me want to put off visiting!

interesting to see the sponsorship name changes for the NZ Aviary. First the Qantas NZ Aviary for two years then simply NZ Aviary, and now (this map) Glade NZ Aviary.

I also note the Chatters Plaza (and Chatters Cafe on the earlier maps) :D

I've never visited Auckland Zoo and only really know what it's like from the TV show but I've been following your maps with a lot of interest. I was just wondering if the chimpanzees on the map were kept in one of, what are now, the orang-utan exhibits?

Before the main group of Chimpanzees left Auckland in 2004 (for Hamilton Zoo), the Orang-Utans were kept as two seperate groups, mostly to keep the males happy. One group would occupy the outdoor exhibit, and the other would stay inside. After the chimps left, one group was given access to their exhibit, so they could always be outside. In mid-2010, one group was moved to Busch Gardens, Florida, and the larger group was further split, so two Orangs now live in the old chimp exhibit. So yes, the chimps were in what is now a chimp exhibit.
