Wolf Exhibit at Tierpark Berlin, 30/08/11

Nice patch of woodland.

Very nice, looks quite spacious. Do they have a full pack hierarchy? I find it disheartening to see wolves kept solitary or in pairs.

We saw about four or five animals, but didn't spend much time watching them so cannot comment on any pack behaviour (with limited time and so much to see, I'm afraid the wolves weren't high on our priorities!). One of our German colleagues may know more..?

@Brum, wolves in pairs are a natural packs, all natural packs consist of a unrelated pair with their offspring. After a few years the offspring will leave and become a solitary wolf, in search of a territory for its own, where it can found it's own pack.

Fair enough, I always assumed a pack consisted of the original pair and offspring that never left. I'm not saying that I thought all stayed with their parents because that'd make no sense.
@Maguari - I imagine the wolves would be low on my list of animals to see at the Tierpark as well...
