Great news for the Tasmanian Wombats ( Vombatus ursinus tasmaniensis ) in Europe: Budapest has bred them ! This subspecies is only kept by 2 Zoos in Europe: Duisburg with a single male and Budapest with 1 pair which has now bred !

that is good news! Wombats aren't particularly easy to breed in captivity.

    Hello folks,

I am planning on a visit to Budapest Zoo on the March 2 and would like to ask some questions of regular visitors or people who are more familiar with this zoo.

    1) Will all the pavilions be opened during my visit ? (bit afraid of some reconstruction works ). I would not want to miss especially Savannah house, Elephant house, Magicall hill and Australia pavilion.

    2) My favourite animal "group" are Australian mammals of which you keep one of the finest collection in Europe. Highlights for me are Wombats, Quolls and Echidnas. All the animals mentioned I saw in European zoos during last years but it would be really nice to see them active once again and make some attractive shots. Are there any regular feeding times or presentations during the day ? What time are they mostly active ?
I would appreciate any responses very much

    Jakub

    Hi Jakub,

Do not worry about the opening times, all the animal houses and themed exhibits are open between 10.00-15.30, no closed sections at this time due to construction works.

Do not miss the wombat baby, feeding time around 10.30-11.00.

Only the Kowaris not on public display at the moment.

Quoll feeding time several times per a day.

Echidna feeding just a bit earlier closing time.

The australian species collection will continue to expand this year as well, with Bennett Wallabies and Koalas. Other rarity will arrive in 2015.

I see on the new map on the website that Giant Anteaters are in the former camel exhibit, are they already in the park or will they arrive later?

I also saw that forum member Orycteropus mentioned that koalas will arrive this year. When are they supposed to arrive?

    All answers are appreciated!

I visited Budapest Zoo yesterday and noticed two Kamchatka brown bears in the enclosure behind the sea lions. Has the zoo gone out of polar bears?
