Good news from Amsterdam Zoo, the first ever giant anteater birth in the Netherlands

Father is Ramon (i believe Zurich?), mother is Potay. Potay is a rescued animal directly from Argentina so she's genetically valuable for the European population.

Artis also received female spectacled bear Franka from Dortmund. Dortmund imported a male from Moscow to mate with her, only the male turned out to be female. They therefor looked for a spot to put Franka for a while, and Artis took her in. She's kept in the old bear-grotto at the back of the park that used to house sloth-bears and later on polar bear Tanja (now Rotterdam). Both the old bear-grotto's are destined to be demolished in the future to make way for one large polar-bear enclosure, but since Artis is building a huge other project atm that'll take some time yet...

Franka's enclosure will be re-planted and re-arranged after which she'll be sharing it with a female of coati's (worked for Antwerp )

For the people wanting to know what Artis is building: They are changing their parking lot (DIRECTLY next to a canal) into an underground parking garage to make way for more room for the animals. The plans of which animals have changed about 3 times allready the last few years...

Didn't one of the anteaters in Artis come from Copenhagen? I know that we sent you one a few years back...

Pjuskebusk was born at Copenhagen and sent to Artis as a female to mate with Ramon, but Copenhagen sexed it wrong and it turned out pjuske was a male. He was then sent on to Overloon Zoo, and Artis replaced him with Potay

Nope, pjuske is still alone (as is the giant ant-eater male at Apenheul). As far as i know Overloon did mention getting a female is rather hard so he'd stay alone for the time being...

I visited Artis today and saw that a malayan tapir was born yesterday! The indoor enclosure isn´t open for public (it never is) but in the gorillahouse you can see part of the enclosure live on a tv-screen.

Mother is Aya, father is Dick. It was born at 11:05 (in the morning). Aya had 1 previous offspring, Tumpat (19 Jan 2007) who now lives at Zooparc Overloon.

great news. Now let's hope, it will grow up healthy and that it is a male, the EEp needs males....

Congratulation to Artis ! Malayan tapirs just one of a few species in europe, where males are more important than females....Other examples Red duikers and Pygmy Hippos, for unknown reasons, more females were born than males...

A babyboom in Artis. At the moment you can watch the following young animals:

Agoutis, oryxes, alpine ibexes, nutrias, capybaras, chinchillas, gray mouse lemurs, pigmy marmosets, girafs, gorillas, Goeldi’s marmosets, Grevy’s zebras, Japanese Macaques, cassowaries, Java mouse deers, nurse sharks, frilled neck Lizards, crested black macaques, two-toed sloths, mandrills, mangrove jellyfish, margays, nilgais, red-bellied tamarins, meerkats, white-faced sakis, sand boas, sea lions, sunbitterns, and spidermonkeys.

For the second time in history the birth of nurse sharks!

Does Amsterdam wants to keep a new male elephant, sometime in the future to breed again? Are there any plans?
