A special birth in Blijdorp. A american stingray (? is that propper english.), Dasyatis americana, was born in the big sharktank in the oceanium. It was taken out of the tank to protect it from the sharks, baracudas, etc. and it's now off show.

The zoo also received it's new male polarbear. It's Eric from Vienna. He is much more impressive than the previous male, so Tania should be blown of her feet by this chap.

In the Oceanium you can see 2 new pacific octopusses. The last 2 turned out to be old females. This time it should be a young couple, so the zoo can try and breed them.

Blijdorp received a second female banteng. Now they have a 1,2 breeding group and a young male from last season.

The last arrivals worth mentioning are 2 southern groundhornbills (Bucorvus leadbeateri). The 2 are visible in the shelter at the gorillaenclosure (previously white nosed meerkats and colobusmomkeys lived there). Ultimately the hornbills will move to the aviary with vultures and marabu storks (still to be build).

After the breeding female of the spotted hyenas died, daughter "Spot" moved to Dvur kralove. So now the male is (temporarily) left alone.

The breeding female Banteng seems to have died as well. Luckily a new female arrived some time ago so there is still a 1,1 potential breeding couple.

Elephant Douanita gave birth this morning at 1.10 am to a healthy daughter. She already drunk some.

She's named Tonya, after the zoo director Ton Dorresteyn who will retire at the end of this month. A perfect farewell present!

I went over to have a look. Here are some of my pictures;

the whole group. Left; Irma, Trong nhi (the sister), Douanita (the mother), Tonya, and right; Bangka.

Trong is a bit jealous and keeps trying to kick tonya. Bangka and douanita protect tonya very well and push trong away. Irma is distracted. I seems that she has contractions again as well now. doing all sorts of crazy positions to try and limit the pain. Perhaps the mummified dead calf will come out now... Her hormones seem to have triggerd this respons. Perhaps because of all the comotion, perhaps because tonya tried to succle...

Some other shots;

Bangka pushing trong away to protect the little one

Between mother and sister

With Irma.

She is trying to find milk in every female, here bangka

This morning they had to close Taman Indah because it seems that the birth of Tonya has stimulated Irma into going into labor as well. She was supposed to give birth one year ago but the baby elephant died and is mummyfing inside hew womb. This will be a very risky stillbirth for her. Let's all hope ....
