New species at the Orchideeën Hoeve : 4 Common marmosets came from Stichting AAP. The 4 animals had lived in bad conditions in privat hands in France and were taken to Stichting AAP were they recovered and now thus given to Orchideeën Hoeve.

In August a large shipment of primates came to the Orchideeën Hoeve. From Stichting AAP no less the 15 Ring-tailed lemurs and a pair of Red-headed lemurs found a new home at the Orchideeën Hoeve :

Sofar the complete collection of the Orchideeën Hoeve was housed inside. On March 30 a new part will open, this time with outside-enclosures. On the species-list for the new area are : lemurs, flamingos and alpacas.

This pond will house the many fish species held in the tropical pond of Klein Costa Rica, which closed in October last year. The new aquarium will be / is being built on one of the current Orchid rooms.

I believe this will be on number 13 or 22 on the map but I can't say for sure:

I will be visiting the Orchideeënhoeve somewhere next week so I'll ask (or see if they've started)

Visiting today. The aquarium is currently being built on number 13. The foundation and the borders of the aquarium are in, but its still pretty bare bones

There are also some other things that might be new, but I can't say for sure. I'll give a bigger update later

The group of American flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber) have laid eggs for the first time in this zoo. Currently 5 eggs are getting incubated by the flamingos.

The name of the new region has been revealed by the zoo's Facebook: It will be called "Pankong river". You will be able to view the pond from above and below, as there's multiple underwater viewing windows and a path along the top of the pool.

I will be visiting in a few weeks to give a full photo update

The fish are coming from Klein Costa Rica which had to close due to the health of the owner.

I'll be visiting tomorrow, and giving my full update tomorrow or Wednesday, including photos and a species list. I've been able to identify 11 species so far (through facebook and the website), but there's bound to be more.

There is indeed one viewing spot with two windows.

Pankong river is looking beautiful! Though it does have a few problems...

    Quick walkthrough:
The aquarium room is directly after the Lori garden, a twisting path brings you down to the main viewing windows. These are quite impressive, but it's also where you can spot the first issue.

The water is quite murky, which might just be a problem of the young-ness of Pankong river. And because it is open-topped, there is no direct lighting above the tank. Which means the water is quite dark, and you can only see the fish that are close to the window.

The viewing area is covered, which does help with viewing, as you're in a relatively dark area. But the cover doesn't go all the way to the wall, which means there's still quite some reflections from the path, obstructing your view.

You can also walk around the pond, via a ramp or a staircase, depending on which side of the window you decide to go up. Here, too, there are some covered areas, which help with reflection on the water's surface. But not enough to allow you to see all the way to the bottom...

Still, Pankong river is very good! I really enjoyed the new area. The species are also quite impressive. Not only the Paroon sharks, but also the enormous Arowanas and surprisingly small Arapaima (it's clearly not the same individual as the one held in Klein Costa Rica). There were also a few fish present which weren't from KCR, and a fish that weren't transferred from KCR at all.

Full species list (there was no signage, so this is all from my own observations):
    Paroon shark
    0.0.3 Giant gourami (albino form)
    5+ Silver arowana
    0.0.1 Arapaima
    Occelate river stingray
20+ Spotted sailfin pleco (Normal and Albino animals present)
    4+ Tiger oscar
    Occelate river stingray
    10+ Frontosa cichlid
    50+ Tanganyikan mouthbrooding cichlid
    Cobalt blue mbuna
    Blue streak hap

Other new arrivals since my last visit:
    - Spangled Cotingas and Sunda pied hornbills in the Orchid garden
    - Long-tailed finch and Star finch in the Butterfly valley
    - Yellow anaconda in the Jungle show

I'll also be sending a full update to ZTL, and of course uploading Zoo Guides soon enough.

Photos of Pankong river (I will also be dumping all my photos in the gallery, of course):

I think instead of mentioning the Occelate river stingray twice you meant the white-blotched river stingray (Potamotrygon leopoldi) for the other one. ;)

Orchideeënhoeve has announced they have big plans for 2024. A countdown has appeared on their website, counting down to the announcement date...

After Pankong river, which is amazing in my opinion, I'm very curious as to what their next project is...

De Orchideeënhoeve is now knows under a new name: Pantropica!

This name change is because they have far surpassed their status as just an orchid breedery, and are much more a tropical garden now.

They also revealed they plan on opening a new palm-themed greenhouse, for which building will begin in the latter half of this year. This new greenhouse will be separate from the current greenhouse and be built next to the parking area. It will be connected to the current indoor area by a tunnel:
