Rimba » Burgers Zoo

I would be very interested to hear if anyone has yet seen the new area at Burgers Zoo -n "Rimba". I believe this has a south-east Asian theme. is it a covered area - like the bush - or a more conventional set of exhibits? Thanks in advance for any comments!

Burgers' Rimba is a series of more or less conventional exhibits. Rimba is the malaysian word for Jungle (what i've been told) and these sets are in the heart of the park. The first is a decent sized (but if you ask me, not overly large) exhibit for (atm 1.2) sunbear, with some decent trees mixed together with a pair of binturong. Theres one glass fronted indoor exhibit attached, with some off-scenes pens behind it. Fenced along the back, and dry-moated on the front.

The second and largest exhibit is for two species of dear (Treba, your field ), muntjak, banteng, macaque's and siamang. It contains quite a few semi-grown trees (about 7m tall or something) and the grass is coming through. The hoofstock is allready in, the siamang moved very recently (i believe last week) from their very tiny indoor only enclosure at the Orangs. Major improvement for them. Stables are not accessible.

Then there's an artificial cave with terraria for pythons and a monitor species. They are visable in pretty tiny tanks, who are poorly decorated but if i'm correct, that just untill their large enclosure around it is ready.

Out of the cave you arrive at the indoor enclosures for the golden cheeked gibbons (gabrielle), macaque's and what were supposed to be dusky leaf monkeys (trachypithecus obscurus). The gibbons and leaf monkeys have a large aviary, the macaque's are in the other exhibit. The dusky leaf monkeys were supposed to be coming from the states, but at the last moment that bounced. Then they were announced to be coming from the UK, but the latest rumours are that that also bounced. All signs of the dusky leaf monkeys have since been removed in the park. I hope they can get their hands on a nice langur species in the near future nonetheless... Out of the indoor exhibit the path curls upwards, alongside the large aviary where a glass-fronted bridge is constructed for you to be eye to eye with the gibbons and langurs...

The last exhibit is for the tigers. When i was there, it wasn't ready yet but as far as i've seen and heared, theres a large glass panel for the visitors to look into the exhibit and everything was still really bare. However, the bear exhibit which opened first allready looks (seen recent pics) very green and lush and i'm sure the rest will follow really soon when the young bamboo kicks in.

In the future, the wild chicken species (Bankiva- how do you call them?) and green peafowl will complete the area. Should be some photo's online, theres only one reasonably poor one on my photo site, but i bet if you googled...

Wasn't there supposed to come a hornbill species somewhere?
(and offcourse the sri lankan leopard enclosure and the jackals (Canis aureus) are part of the rimba as well. But those exhibits are already a bit older)

The rimba is a good example of a series of modern exhibits. The onliest comments I have had about them were the fences ( but when the plants have grown larger I expect these will be less visible), and the poor terraria for the monitor lizards and pythons ( although I heard later that these were temporary). I expected more of a jungle experience, but that's not hte case at this moment. Perhaps whithin a few years. But I was certainly not diappointed.

Rimba needs time to grow. Most of the comments I read were about the vegetation and the terraria. As every new exhibit, the bushes and trees needs some time to grow and to cover up ugly fences. I really don't understand the comments about this subject from those who calls themselves 'zoo fanatics'.

For me Rimba is a good example of a modern zoo exhibit.

As a zoo fanatic I had expected another solution instead of these fences. I already pointed out my expectation that the fences will get out of sight when the plants kick in. I was most startled by the terraria, because they were not of a level I expected from a zoo like burger's. They didn't even look like they were at a level you would expect from a lesser zoo. And there was no explanation these terraria would be temporary. Luckily I heard from athers that they were.
