Some updates from the Dutch Zoos

ARTIS Zoo Amsterdam
In the beginning of july, the 2 chicks of the Double-wattled Cassowary went for the first time outside. Since 2006 they have each year a young one, this year even 2 , after 70 years off no breeding!!!

A new lemur island is opened. But the Red Ruffed Lemurs have chased away the ring-taild lemurs and the Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs. The Ring-tailed Lemur are back in the small mammal house. In the old cages are now Fennec Fox and Geoffrey's Marmosets.

A Grevy-zebra has given birth to a male called Jambo. They live on the savannah plane with the meerkats, White-tailed gnu, white pelicans and Helmeted Guineafowls.

A White Pelican has escaped. Artis has 2 groups of pelicans, one on the African savannah and one near the reptile house. The young pelicans can fly away and for the second time the pelica has escaped to the north of holland. They can survive there ,we will see....

A Red panda had 2 cubs, but she didn't take care of them. A zookeer had a cat with babies and she laid the babys by cat and her cubs. One panda was dead and the other has lived one week.

A Grey Heron landed in the lion exhibith in Artis. The Heron was a nice desert It was caught on camera.

Thanks a lot for the info. How many Whitetailed gnus has Artis in the moment ? And tehy are still breeding them ?

Do has Beekse Bergen the northern cheteahs, they have to give them up, because they should not keeping both subspecies of cheetahs, so they can't mix.

I think, the northern cheetahs will go to two other ducth zoos.

Why would Beekse Bergen have to give up the northern cheetahs? They are kept seperate of the southerns (obviously) so they can't mix. And beekse bergen has one of the best breeding records in cheetahs in the country (i think second after wassenaar) so they have a lot of experience with the animals. So to me it seems they are the ideal zoo to keep the northerns.

Safaripark Beekse Bergen:

1.1. striped hyaena (H.h. sultana) have acces to their outdoor enclosure.

On Thuesday 0.1 African elephant comes in from Duisburg (Dzomba 15 years, regular oestrus). This brings back the hope for breeding because non of the existing 0.5 animals has any good oestrus at all at the moment.

Cheetah 'Wacu' of Amersfoort Zoo was euthanized this week. He was very weak, and suffered to much. He was nearly 15 years, and was a well known animal for the visitors. For many years he lived with his brother Wico in the zoo. Wico died last year. Both will be very missed by the regular visitors, including me. Whenever I came to Amersfoort, I never forgot the visit the cheetahs.
