Last nigth 30 birds were stolen from Avifauna. Among the rare birds are Mynas, Parrots, Toucans and a lot of Hornbills. The birds are however ringed and chiped so it's hoped the birds will be found again !
From the 30 stolen birds the first has been found. A male Von der Deckens hornbill was found flying free in a back-garden about 70 kilometers from Avifauna. A keeper from Avifauna directly went to the site a took the breeding-female - which was still at the park - with him. She was placed in a cage in the garden and the male came directly to her ! He was succesfully catched and now both birds are back at Avifauna. 29 to go.......
2 more of the stolen birds have been found free-flying n the Netherlands. A Great blue touraco and a "Yellow-cheeked" hornbill ( prop. Sulawesi Tarictic hornbill ? ) were found and caught. During the catching one of the birds flow however against a train and died. It's however not told if this was the touraco or the hornbill.....
As I now discovered 36 birds were stolen ! The police has however made a new discovery. In a shed they found 14 of the stolen birds, 1 of which was already dead and several other are in bad condition. Lets hope all these birds recover and that the remaining stolen birds also will be found soon !
Good to see the police have got on their trail, hopefully the rest of the birds can be found, before it is too late.
A male North African ostrich has also arrived (hatched 2014) courtesy of Hagenbeck Hamburg Zoo. A female bird is planned for … too!
New species for this year will include red panda, bearded dragon, leafcutter ants and GUIANAN cock-of-the-rock ! (To attract more visitors, more non-birds are being added to the collection)
