Quote from the article: “But, my expertise is in financial marketing and operations – that’s my profession, not really animals. I’m really a manager.” This is exactly the problem I have with this park. Also, if Wildlands truly is "the zoo of the future", I have bad hopes for the future...
The feature article itself is old hat and was published about a year or so ago, so not exactly quite recent. I believe it was published some time prior to or just after opening of the new Wildlands. BTW: due to this "mind over matter" stuff and the very fact the novelty value led so (tooo....) many visitors into the attraction have prevented me from visiting. To be honest: I was a bit old school and loved the old Emmen Zoo. That is surely now a lost option sadly.
Aleid Rensen, former owner of the zoo in Emmen, passed away last week at the age of 77. Oud-dierentuindirecteur Aleid Rensen (77) is overleden
She was a visionary in terms of new directions for zoos and presentation / visitor interpretation in Continental Europe I would say. It surely inspired quite a few others to follow suit. She recently published a great book on the old Noorder Dierenpark and its history. This was probably her swan song (... alas, so it seems). She was also an informed critic of later year's zoo policy in the old Emmen Zoo and continued to do so over the new concept Wildlands. I am saddened (and somewhat shocked) she passed on so early.
The book she wrote us sadly only in Dutch, as it is one of thr best zoo books I have ever read and it should be a must read for every zoo-enthousiast...
Wrong decision made by a wallaby . Wanted to look how life is outside the enclosure at Wildlands but ended up in the Lion-eclosure ! Lions happy, wallaby dead.

Number of species kept at the new zoo is slowly growing, now a large group of squirrel monkeys has taken resident into their new enclosure and for Nortica Snowy owls and Great grey owls have been planned.
