was surprised to read the above favourable reviews of this zoo as i would have expected it to be a depressing type of place. i was in athens a few years ago and avoided the opportunity to visit and am now raging that i missed out on what sounds a really interesting collection with many rarities. it is informative threads such as this one which makes zoochat such a valuable site.
DublinLion: Based on the few pictures (and videos) that there are of this Zoo on the internet, I too was expecting the exhibits to be pretty bad. But I have to admit, they were MUCH better than I expected! No, this is not a Burgers Zoo, Leipzig, Bronx, or Woodland Park -- but it's certainly not a terrible zoo, exhibit-wise. Some of the exhibits are actually very good, while the others are merely "average". I saw nothing that I'm rank as "terrible".
Nice to read some fresh news from Attica Zoo. But I think that dolphins came to Spata from Klaipeda Aquarium in Lithuania.
@ANyhuis and Arek: Thanks for the reviews of the zoo. If either of you have pictures do you think that you could put some up in the gallery? I just checked and it is empty. The only pictures from Greece are some cool pictures of the little elephants that lived out on the islands.
I took a few pictures, but for the moment, I've completely misplaced my camera! Hope I haven't lost it!
Thanks very much Arek. @ANyhuis: Alan, I hope that you were able to find your camera! I hate when that happens.
hey ! i am from greece and I have visited attica zoo. it's my favourite. it has 2000 animals from 400 species. It opened in May 2000as a Bird Park, hosting the 3rd largest bird collection in the world (1100 birds from 300 different species)In April 2001, when the “World of Reptiles” was added to the Attica Zoological Park, constant expansions and additions began including the “Greek Fauna” section, with animals rarely seen in Greece (summer 2002), the “African Savannah” with animals from Africa (February 2003), the monkeys and apes section (June 2003), the completion of the “Big Cats” section and the extension of the African Savannah (December 2004), the “Monkey Forest”, where visitors can be in the same enclosure with the monkeys (early 2005), the “Cheetah Land”, where 4 Cheetahs are kept in a large enclosure which visitors can cross through a special corridor, the chimpanzees and gibbons section (March 2008) and finally the “Arid Lands” section hosting animals such as camels, Somali wild asses, etc. (April 2008). In addition, in May 2010, 2 white male rhinos were added to the Park’s “family” and in June 2010, 4 dolphins and 2 California sea lions became members of AZP's family. Future plans include the expansion of the facilities with “Dinosavropolis”, an Evolution Museum with an emphasis on the Age of the Dinosaurs, as well as “Okeanopolis”, an Aquarium of international stature. I took many pictures. i am new here so can anyone tell me how can i show thme to you ?
A female Giant Anteater has now arrived from Berlin to join the male who came from the UK earlier this month

As someone here wrote, that elephantbull Mekong will leave Artis next year to go to Athens my question: Does anybody know, if they meanwhile built an elephant exhibit there? Only for elephant bull keeping? Any pitcs?
does anybody have any info on the white puma born at this zoo in 2011, making it 3 years old now. is it still alive? still at the zoo or transferred out? on display, what sex is it? have it's parents been paired to each other again and of so have any of their other kittens been white? is it leucistic or albino? sorry about all the questions, but aberrant animals fascinate me.
