muntjacs

the animal on the left is a full-grown female Reeves muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi). The other animal is a giant in comparison. It is the same animal as in this photo http://www.zoochat.com/1686/muntiacus-gongshanensis-gongshan-muntjac-male-282543/ but whether it is M. gongshanensis I do not know. It does not really look like a black muntjac though. The enclosure was labelled as holding Reeves muntjac, black muntjac and tufted deer. There were lots of Reeves, one black muntjac and then this animal. No tufted deer visible on either visit, and I think I saw every animal in the enclosure because on the first day they were being fed by the visitors so all of them were up at the fence (this photo was taken through the glass front). According to "A guide to the mammals of China", the difference between black muntjac and Gongshan muntjac include: black muntjac has tuft on the forehead and lacks white spot/collar on the ankles and wrists, while Gongshan muntjac lacks tuft on the forehead, only has long hair around the antlers' bases, and has white spot/collar around the ankles and wrists. And gongshan muntjac is about 2/3 the size of black muntjac. Thus maybe this big one is still the black muntjac.

OK! But then who is the female in the background?http://www.zoochat.com/1686/muntiacus-sp-282544/

In some of my photos the sitting down muntjac has one back leg stretched out, and there is no white on the ankle.

Its size - bigger than doubled Reeve's muntjac, the tail is longer - (2x), drawing on his head like a red muntjac.
