Taken from wild cats in NZ zoos, Could anyone give an update on how the Golden cats are doing? Last series of "The Zoo" I saw, they had 1.0 born after the 2.0. If I remember correctly he was taken to be handreared because of a wound on his neck. Have they produced any other litters?
I can't add anything except they are still off display... Message daveb as he works there in some capacity...
Sorry I don't have much information off the top of my head. We have 2.2 Golden Cats that are off display. They were originally in an enclosure next to the Tiger (since replaced with the new ASC Otter enclosure). I understand that they are off display due them being rather neverous and not reacting well to being on public display. I'll try and get some more specific info and relay what I have.
I've heard that about this species too... In particular I've read being on display almost guarantees they won't breed which I'm pretty sure is all Auckland is interested in at the moment (especially given the lack of an enclosure for them)...
This was the main reason they pulled them off display, and even in there off display enclosure they have wicker fenceing attached to their enclosure to hide them from staff.
in september this year well 2010 2 new golden cats arrieved called kuching singha 1 male 1 female the zoo also has another male and female dont no there names thoe
Kuching and Singha arrived at Auckland Zoo from Adelaide in 2008. Kuching died in 2009 (or early 2010?). Golden cats are being phased out of New Zealand collections so the zoo certainly isn't going to be importing any more. Your user-name is entirely inappropriate as you are most definitely not a spokesperson for the zoo as it would imply, and I would suggest the zoo itself would be very unhappy about the assumptions this would cause. Perhaps you should ask one of the moderators to change it for you.
The male from the original pair's second litter (Siagon, who was handreared) is now at the RSCC is the UK
According to the "Animal Records Keeping Specialist Advisory Group September Newsletter", Auckland Zoo are to transfer one of their female golden cats to France and their other female to Germany.
What you say is true but atleast 1 collection in the UK has objected to a users name on this forum and got them to change it,so be warned you may well have a problem in the future!
thats not totally true.... Auckland Zoo as a registered buisness has copy right over that name, therfore any one external to the organisation associating themselves with that name can be sued by Auckland for breaching their ownership of the title
Just a quick update re: the Golden Cats. They are due to leave 8 Feb, along with a male from Hamilton. They will be going to France and Germany respectively.
I will miss the male from Hamilton, he had a habit of hiding from people he could hear walking along the boardwalk and then jumping up at the mesh from below when they peered in. Gave people a hell of a fright. And also meant you could see him up close, he's really quite big! Their export means the complete demise of another species in Australasia,
I agree that its a shame when a species disappears and we are no longer able to see them in the flesh so to speak. As we'd all agree, the overriding reason for having any critically endangered animals in our collections is to breed them to [try] and ensure they survive. The are amongst the most beautiful cats (though I think the Clouded Leopard and Marbled Cats have it on the jaw dropping looks department) and they will be missed.
Yes, I'd have to agree with that, they are much more useful being part of the programme in Europe. Having said that, I hope the fishing cats don't go the same way. It seems very minimalist having only one small cat species (serval) managed in the whole of Australasia. Hope Hamilton can breed the fishing cats and get some other zoos interested in them to (looking at you Auckland ).
