Ther must be something in NZ waters that favours the birth of male giraffes, there's only been two females in the last six years

Yep, it's called inbreeding, and breeding from non recommended animals. Another surplus, unwanted animal.

how does inbreeding cause in increase in male births?

It's fairly well-documented than an increase in inbreeding of some species can lead to an increase in the number of male offspring. This is eveident in a number of zoo species.

Especially in the Rothschilds sub group of Aussie giraffes. The only two females to be born in Nz was one at Wellington, totally unrelated to the group at Orana and Auckland. And another at Auckland, which I THINK, was born to a mother that was born at Wellington. And so not as inbred as the Orana group
