Otters multiply at Wellington Zoo
Old 26-03-2005

From scoop.co.nz:

Otters multiply at Wellington Zoo

Wellington Zoo’s Otter, Yang is no longer going solo with the introduction of two new male Otter friends, Jak’ura and Oscar.

From Auckland Zoo and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve respectively, Jak’ura and Oscar were also alone in their enclosures.

Wellington Zoo Keeper, Rebekah Turner says “Otters are social animals, so Auckland Zoo, Willowbank Wildlife Reserve and Wellington Zoo decided it would be better if the Otters were together in one location”.

“We really wanted to house the Otters and we have the facilities to do so, especially with Yang’s large pool, so we were the lucky ones in getting all three Otters”.

Wellington Zoo otters
Old 04-04-2005

they are Oriental small claw otters .
If anyone has been to Mogo Zoo , they would probably had seen an ex Wellington Zoo otter that was a real houdini escape artist .
The zoo last bred otters in 2002 .
I am not sure why they no longer are breeding them .... its not as if they are the most expensive animal to display .....
Have a look at the Wellington Zoo website
http://www.wellingtonzoo.com/ for more info .
When I get around to developing the film , I will send the photos to Sim to put on the website -- there is at least one photo of the otter/s that is amongst them .

Otter keepers
Old 20-05-2005

and guess what ? The keepers get into the enclosures with them for behavioural enrichment training . They also give a small talk about otters .
Strangely enough , there is no "danger hype " in evidence , even though the otters at the zoo can give a nasty bite ...
