Lodz Zoo show the first concept of Orientarium. It should by ready in 2018 or 2018. Shetch was developed by Wrocław Zoo. Orientarium will be housed by gibons, orangutans, sharks, rays, langurs, asian elephants, gavials, clouded leopars, malayan tapirs, anoas or babirussas, sun bears and much more... It looks even more impressive than Afrykarium. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdF6_pkoY_E&feature=youtu.be
Looks really good! Though the pessimistic side of me wonders what will have to be demolished to make space... (I haven't actually been to Lodz Zoo yet)
Agreed, the species list is wonderful. What's in the video? I can't view it because of the Great Firewall. If it's worth it could someone post some stills?
The video shows an animation of what the Orientarium will look like. There are some stills at the top of this article: Nowe zoo w ?odzi ma by? w 2019 roku
This looks incredibly ambitious and I hope the zoo does manage to pull it off. I visited Lodz Zoo for the first time this year and I must admit that it didn't look like it had two pennies to rub together, let alone the means to fund something of this scale. Of all of the Polish Zoos I've visited, I'd say that Lodz was the most in need of upgrading. The whispers I heard earlier this year suggested that Lodz was in a far-from-stable situation financially. Even its very existence was feared to be in jeopardy since the local authority had abandoned responsibility for its upkeep (presumably it is not able to support itself via gate receipt). Can any member shed any light on Lodz's apparent turn around in fortune?
that looks cool. I discovered that Sloniarnia means elephant in Polish! Such a better name than elephant! when you get to Singapore or somewhere, definitely return to this thread and watch the video.
I thought 'elephant' was just 'słon'? I think 'Słoniarnia' is broadly 'elephant house'. (I know more zoo Polish words than food or basic greeting Polish words. This is zoo nerd linguistics. )
you could be right. I put Sloniarnia into Google Translate and it came back with elephant. Just now I put in Slon, and it also came back with elephant. Slon is not a better name than elephant though. It is too harsh. Sloniarnia is more flowing and sounds like Narnia.
Thanks, that's really helpful! Looks like it will be very good overall, although the size of the sharks is maybe ambitious? Also the macaque enclosure is kind of disappointing. Looking in the gallery all of the enclosures look like they will be upgrades over the current housing, it will be fascinating to see how the project moves from plan to reality.
I've watched the video now. The plan continues to impress, although I hope the final version doesn't include the dry moat for the elephants and the wet moat for the orangs.
A lot of animals have to leave the zoo to make the constuction site of the Orientarium free. : 1.6 Blackbucks send to Szeged - Hungary Red river hog went to France 1.0 Hyena went to Belfast 1.0 Hyena went to Olmen - Belgium a whole lot of waterfowl went to Zamosc The Cheetahs ( 2.3 ) are still there and its still not sure wen and if they will leave the zoo.
After Wroclaw, Lodz does it! A company was chosen to build Orientarium. This complex would cover 7,5 ha, so about half of the area of the zoo, cost 359m PLN or 83,5m EUR. Director of zoo Wroclaw, Mr Ratajszczak, consulted the plan. Several buildings and many outdoor exhibits will house, among others, up to 12 Asian elephants, orangutans, langurs, macaques, clouded leopards, sun bears, crocodiles, birds, sharks and aquarium with underwater tunnel. Opening is planned (optimistically) for 2019. Poland has about 3 times fewer zoos per person or per capita income than other Central European countries like Czechia or Hungary, according to the thread started by Nikola Chavkosk. So we can expect lots of new zoological developments in the next years. Visualization: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdF6_pkoY_E Info (in Polish only): ZOO w ?odzi. Orientarium wybuduj? I googled and saw there was a news item about the orientarium but it was in polish and I couldn't get it translate. Maybe there is a Polish zoochatter who could translate it or give a brief summary of it. (It was published on 4 january)
The article, available here http://lodz.naszemiasto.pl/artykul/...ie-planowanej-budowy,3971414,art,t,id,tm.html, suggests that there will be a delay to the project due to implications of wrongdoing in the awarding of the construction contract. Hopefully, if there has been anything untoward, this can be resolved soon....
A contract is signed to built the orientarium for PLN 262.000.000. It is scheduled to be finished in 2020
I can´t wait to see it when it´s completed. But in that visualisation (video), I coudn´t see any gharials or other crocs. Are they still part of the planning?
