Afrykarium was officially opened. Yesterday evening event with the participation of local authorities, special guests, etc. And from today open for all visitors. Afrykarium is open from 9 to 20 (on mondays from 12 to 20).

    Hello,

I'd like to ask some people familiar with Wroclaw Zoo for some info. Are there still plans to exhibit any African otter species in Afrykarium ? Would be very nice addition, according to Afrykarium's layout they should have been placed next to the crocs but afaik its enclosures serves as the second crocs exhibit.
Are the Bear Cuscus visible for public yet and if not, is there any chance to see them somewhere in the zoo in the next future ?

    Thanks in advance

    Jakub

African otters will be exhibited in Afrykarium for sure. Nowoadays there are less than 40% of target species.

Beas cuscus is currently out of show.

    Thanks Kalat,

May I know what African otter species is supposed to be kept in Afrykarium ? I would guess African clawless ( import ) or Spotted-necked ( sourced from Valencia ).

Bear cuscuses are still behind the scenes but soon to be on the show, probably in monkey house.
First birds in Afrykarium - four species of ducks in hippo part. More birds (touracos among others) soon to be in Congo jungle.
Female manatee from Berlin will arrive soon.
I don't know what species of otter will be kept.

Third or fourth this year. Much remarkable was birth of white-cheeked gibbon - first ever in Poland. Also next balabac mouse deer was born.

Good for the manatees at Berlin-the remaining animals have now more space-at last.

I have not heard that all female manatees at Tierpark would be leaving. I just thought that this would enable Tierpark to concentrate on having the remaining female mated to either of their male manatees.

I have heard (maybe it's just rumors) that Tierpark wants to send away all the manatees. There are plans to rebuild / enlarge the manatees pool.

I really hope, this rumours comes true in the interest of the Berlin manatees.

Thanks for the review, it was great to get a walkthrough of the Afrykarium and the photos are brilliant. I hope the zoo adds a few more species of reptiles and birds, and perhaps small mammals to this amazing exhibit, which is very high on my must-see list!

For the first time in its history an African penguin has hatched at Wroclaw Zoo.
Another intresting hatching is that of Yellow-headed tortoises.

I assume you meant elongated tortoise Indotestudo elongata as they are more commonly known.

Wrocław Zoo has today confirmed the death of the manatee Teresa:

Wroc?aw: Nie ?yje manat, chluba afrykarium. Zwierz? by?o dwa razy starsze ni? wszyscy my?leli - Gazetawroclawska.pl

We wroc?awskim Afrykarium zdech? manat. Teresa by?a starsza ni? przypuszczano

    http://www.tuwroclaw.com/wiadomosci...ium-okazalo-sie-ze-jest-,wia5-3266-24014.html

It is understood that Teresa died several days ago, but the news has only appeared in media today. There is no announcement on the zoo's own website:

    Zoo Wroc?aw

When Teresa was acquired from Berlin in December 2014 it was believed that she was only 20 years old. However, her mobility was poor for an animal of that age, and following her death it is now thought that she was at least 35 and may have been as old as 38. It is not yet known whether it will be possible for the zoo to obtain a new female manatee.

I visited the zoo last Friday and saw two manatees. Were there three at one point or did I see the now dead one in her last days? I didn't notice either of the two manatees that I saw acting ill but I wouldn't know what to look for with manatees acting ill anyway.

I've been looking through my photos and can't find one showing three manatees together, so I can't say for certain. I do have a photo of two manatees, one much bigger than the other, so I wonder whether those two could have been male and female (I believe the females are much larger than the males). Certainly one of the manatees in my photos has a penis. The other one doesn't have any visible appendage, but that's not to say that there's not one there somewhere.

However, here is an article from an English-language local news website which confirms the Polish sources above:

35 Thousand Visit Zoo Before Price Hike - Wroc?aw Uncut

"Meanwhile in other Zoo related news, the Afrykarium were sad to announce the death of Teresa, a Manatee that was billed as one of its star attractions. According to Gazeta Wroclawska, tests have confirmed the female Manatee was almost twice as old as the 20 year figure quoted by Berlin Zoo."

That was published just eight hours ago. One of the Polish sources certainly mentioned that she had died a few days ago, so perhaps she died overnight on Thursday and was therefore not there on Friday.
