Can someone enlighten me why our most viewed photo (by far) is still a picture of a LEGO SUBMARINE!! I was expecting a long thread of comments which explained why so many were viewing it but nothing......
Of all my photos, I onyl have one with over 1,000 views - a perfectly ordinary picture of Blackpool's Markhor - not an espcially attractive photo, no long discussion - nearly 1,500 views. I can only think it must be linked from somewhere (either on here or elsewhere). My next most-viewed has only 985 views and that has four pages of discussion! (a shot of Colchester's Mandrill exhibit)
Journalists say that you need to include sex, drugs and/or rock n' roll in your news story in order to generate interest in it, not matter how 'hot' the subject might be. But I'm not sure what Sim would think of us adding that kind of stuff to our photos though!
Mystery solved! I discovered the 'LinkBack' button - the reason that the Markhor picture has so many views seems to be that it is linked from this blog entry: Goat tops self in Canadian zoo Porcospino
well that beats mine! 1: http://www.zoochat.com/198/building-new-chimp-climbing-frame-92861/index2.html 2: http://www.zoochat.com/198/jazz-bornean-orangutan-92849/ 3: http://www.zoochat.com/189/fur-seal-98570/
The 'official' top 12 on the stats page lists them by views per day since they were uploaded (and I think only includes shots over 90 days old). By that ranking the Liger is down at 6th (just pipping my own highest entry for views-per-day from Colchester!). http://www.zoochat.com/stats/galleries/
My top 3; http://www.zoochat.com/673/leopard-seal-atlantis-marine-park-yanchep-30221/#linkbacks (Incidentally using linkback (thanks Maguari!!) found this interesting Facebook page about the closed park where Dino the Leopard Seal was held.....yikes!!) http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?p...1015142368&oid=10063566570&fbid=1340451344083 http://www.zoochat.com/107/polar-bear-enclosure-vienna-2006-a-30813/ http://www.zoochat.com/198/bornean-orang-enclosures-dudley-2006-a-37285/ Enjoy...
My "most viewed" http://www.zoochat.com/180/bai-panoramic-view-65387/ 696 views and 17 comments by the moment.

Thank you for showing us this link. I'd never been anywhere near there before. I can't compete on the number of views - but I'm pleased and flattered to be doing well in the section below. Thank you to everyone who voted. Alan
This has given me a bit of an idea about creating a set of user-specific stats. Such as: - historical post rates (showing the frequency with which a user posts) - most replied to threads a user has started - highest rated threads a user has started - most replied to photos a user has posted - most viewed photos as user has posted - highest rated photos a user has posted - which zoos a user posts the most about - which zoos a user uploads the most photos for - etc I'd have to think a little about how to implement this - but I think it could be interesting.
Don't forget that those particular statistics are showing a "view rate" ranking. This is a simple calculation based on the number of views divided by the number of days since the photo was uploaded (with a minimum number of days required). Otherwise, the photos which have been here the longest would get the most number of views and it would be very difficult for newer photos to overtake them in the rankings. The downside is that a relatively new photo that seems to be quite popular - at least to begin with (eg. due to an incoming link like in the case you mentioned), can tend to dominate the rankings as the initial interest spike combined with a relatively low number of days since being uploaded will give it a much higher ranking. However, as interest wanes, the ranking should trend back to being somewhat more "normal" and it may well drop down the ranking lists. I could probably have two sets of "most viewed" statistics - one which shows raw view counts (favours older photos), and one which shows view rates (views per day, which can tend to favour newer photos). I should also be able to link to a page which shows you all the photos ranked in order (one page at a time), so you can browse through the top 100 if you wanted to. Ahh - so much fun stuff to do, so little time
As the author of that ridiculous Lego submarine picture, I must say that if I had known it would be so popular I would never have posted it! It clearly is being linked somewhere because no respectable zoochatter would choose to view that photo over the others that show the aquarium exhibits that are the focus of most of the pictures I took! I only included it to show some of the details of that facility!
