Bojnice, the most depressing zoo I ever came across in Europe so far. I had to leave after only minutes, as I just couldn't bear it anylonger to watch animals without any possibility to seek refuge from the extreme heat, completely bare enclosures everywhere.

Bojnice has imported 0.1 African Palm Civet (born in 2016) from a collection in Togo - the only other individuals of this species in Europe are currently held at Poznan.

Great news. They will finally have a normal life. The old elephant house was really terrible.

Recently a male Kirk's dik-dik was born at the zoo, he was given the name Upa.
The mother is Uno (2018) and the father is Sheldrik (2014).
Would this be the first birth of a Kirk's dik-dik at Bojnice?

The post also mentiones that they are currently "breeding" 7 individuals, 3 males and 4 females. I presume that they have 7 dik-diks in total, could someone confirm this?

Yes, that post states they have now 7 individuals.

Automatic translation from Czech or Slovak language into English has some pitfails and often leads to comic texts.

Czech (and Slovak) language doesn´t differentiate between keeping and breeding of animals, you need the rest of the sentence to get it right.

Both are represented by verb "chovat", whose main meaning is usually to cradle a child in your arms. Other meanings - to harbor, to foster and to behave. Verbs with same root are "pochovat" (to take a toddler in arms, but also to burry a dead human), "zachovat" (to conserve, to protect), "vychovat" (to nurture, to bring up), "chovat se" (to behave oneself) and some others.

"Chůva" is a nanny. "Vychovatel" is a tutor/educator of children. "Chovatel" is a person who owns and breeds animals and is often used for zoo keepers, alternative word for a zoo keeper is "ošetřovatel" and means a nurse.

The zoo is in process of reducing its Kirk's dik-dik stock. Two females were sent to Ljublana zoo in Slovenia, a male was sent to Safari Ree Park in Denmark and one male will go soon to Plzen.

Recent birts include a Defassa waterbuck and a three-banded armadillo.

Slovakia announced lockdown for people without vaccination for covid. Zoo visitors must prove their vaccination status (or positive PCR test within last 180 days) at the gate to buy a ticket.

Following houses are closed currently - monkey house, elephant house, vivarium (reptiles) and souvenir shop.

The Fota Wildlife Park, Ireland informed us that a group of 0.3 colobus monkeys would be arriving from Bojnice Zoo fairly soon.
SOURCE: New Female Black and White Colobus Monkey, Freya, arrives. - Fota Wildlife Park

Makes one wonder how large the colobus monkey troupe in Bojnice is and what plans exist for the species in the future here. The colobus at Bojnice are mantled guereza (Colobus guereza caudatus).

NOTA BENE: The zoo specialises in some primates and has an important role to play in Roloway monkey breeding (and the WAPCA project).

The new elephant building was designed for 2.4 elephants with breeding in mind. There are some nice info panels on their zoo website and it has probably been the biggest investment in the zoo in modern times.

I wonder what project is next up at Bojnice which as yet has a rather traditional zoo set up and setting. A lot of hoofstock in large expansive enclosure. @Jana, do you have any suggestions or knowledge what is happening next?
