Last week I visited three Slovakian zoos: Zoo Bojnice, Zoo Spišská Nová Ves and Zoo Košice and I thought that you would appreciate some sort of report. :) So let´s get started:

Zoo Bojnice: The best Zoo in Slovakia. Some really nice and spacious exhibits for various antelope and deer species. Monkey house is fairly average, altough bigger outer exhibits should be bigger. Cat house needs reconstruction, Lion exhibit and cages for small cats are somehow alright, but other exhibits there are not enough for the animals living there. Off-show areas are really old too. The worst exhibit is Elephant House which will need some massive reconstruction, if Zoo wants to continue with keeping elephants.

The zoo has two parts: "Square" where is the monkey house, cat house, bear pit, winter housing for birds, some aviaries, pond and other small stuff and from here goes one road around whole zoo. You can go in two directions but you´ll always get to see everything.

The prices are reasonable, toilets are clean, food is good (at least in the kebab stand where i bought it and i wasn´t looking in other places)

All things considered the zoo is really nice, and it can only get better

Interesting species: Hamlyn Monkey, Roloway monkey, Shensi takin, White-lipped deer, Northern red-fan parrot, Grey-cheeked hornbill,...

I´ll add the other two reviews in comments, so stay tuned :)

    Zoo Spišská Nová Ves

Small zoo, where you can really see the lack of resources. It lies in city park so at least the surroundings are nice. The exhibits there are really small and very basic, constructed just to cover the basic animal needs (sometimes not even that). There are 2 fairly good exhibits - Tiger, Gibons others are just "meh"...Newly open exhibit for bears, doesn´t look like it was open at the beginning of May, it´s just another concrete pit without any grass or dirt. To zoo belongs also separate Aqua Tera building which is not directly in the zoo but lies in the same city park like 2 minutes away from the zoo´s exit gate.

Animal collection is nothing special: lions, camels, ostriches, waterfowl, deers, parrots, capybaras,...the only surprise for me was pair of Jungle cats, but just because, they are not really common in Czech or Slovak zoos.

    Zoo Košice

Pretty nice zoo, huuuuge exhibits for ungulates, bears, wolf, lynx, cranes and other big birds (sometimes you can´t even see the other end), but most of them looks old and rusty. The stables and fences would appreciate rebuilding or at least some painting job. Apart from that the exhibits are great. The same cant be said about exhibits for lions and tigers, which are a bit tiny and old looking, but still fairly good. There is also small tropical house with tamarins, lemurs, parrots,...and also a small terrarium.

As I said the zoo is huge and it takes a while to walk through it, also the road system is a bit complicated but it´s still a nice walk.

So that´s all from me, if you have some questions, dont hesitate to ask.

I´ll try to upload some of the exhibit pictures today and will continue in coming days.
