giant armadillo - bizarre! i believe they often walk on their rear legs a bit like some pangolin species do. very, very unuasual reature and they are indeed GIANT!!

yapok - have you ever seen one? i haven't. when i was in the brazil i eventually described to my guide the animal i was talking about (it seems the name "yapok" is certainly not originated from the central amazon where i was at the time..) eventually using my artstic skills to draw one in the mud. he was quite impressed i even knew what it was and said you very rarely see them... a opossum that thinks its an otter. its got my attention.

an aardwolf i have seen. really its just a slender little hyeana.

and mark, yes biggups for the jaguar. i think we need to start a pro jaguar movement (though there might be even more clouded leopard fans! )

jejeje, I actually just came back from Fiji and saw orange doves in the wild. They are absolutely ridiculously colourful! I'll put on a review of Kula Eco-Park some time soon, which has one in captivity (with a damaged wing).

I wish someone would start up a captive-breeding programme for the black-spotted cuscus! Tim Flannery's "Mammals of New Guinea" has a lot about them in it (excellent book, as is the "Amazing Animals" one).

The name "yapok" is actually derived from the Yapok River (or Oyapok River in older atlases) so as an animal's name wouldn't be recognised by the locals.

here's a pic of the orange dove at Kula, for those who haven't seen one before. I doubt there are any outside Fiji so if you want to see a real one, head over there...

Beautiful. I love them. I have to say that it is probably the nicest island pigeon. The wierdest is the secheylles blue pigeon, with the wierd warts on it's face. I beleive jurong used to house them. If I could I'd smuggle them into my dream zoo!!

Not sure if the Seychelles pigeons are still alive at Jurong. They're housed in the 2-hectare aviary, and i've only seen them once in 2005.

Anyway, this is my dream list:

okapi
clouded leopard
red and white giant flying squirrel
golden snub-nosed monkey
indri
aye-aye
tahitian blue lory
philippine eagle
amazon river dolphin
sumatran rabbit
banded linsang
fijian banded iguana

I want more species though

Sumatran Orang-Utan
Mountain Gorilla
Gelada
Amur Tiger
Polar Bear
African Hunting Dog
Giant Otter
African Elephant
Okapi
Emperor Penguin
Hyacinth Macaw
Kakapo

My choices are restricted to the rare, large, attractive or social animals as these usually make up my favourite zoo exhibits. There are plenty of other smaller species I could have included (paradise flycatchers are a personal favourite) but there's something about the big guys that brings an extra 'wow' factor.

I am of course assuming that all exhibits will be spacious, naturalistic and provide for the requirements of each species (including climatic!)

Spectacled Bear
Ratel
Mandrill

I found the Angolan Colobus much prettier then the "normal" Kikuyu or black and white ones...

And i think the red colobus would be even weirder and probably even prettier

Remarkable at what species are mentioned on this forum, most of them i'd never put in a dream zoo. But i guess some of them are also mentioned because you Aussies have never seen them, just like none of the Aussies put platypus in their dream zoo...

My turn:

Leatherback sea turtles
Southern hairy-nosed wombats
Eastern grey kangaroos
Sumatran rhinos
Tasmanian devils
Sumatran orangs
Bilbies
Siberian tiger
Moose
Kiwi
Grizzly bear
Hummingbirds

Since I speak from a zookeepers perspective, could they all be trained to shift on command, clean their own enclosure, and never, ever abandon any of their offspring?

On the contrary--it would leave more time for devising ever better enrichment items, continuing research into the natural behavior of the animals, and careful animal observations to contribute to the knowledge base of captive husbandry practices.
