Kolmården Zoo in Sweden has recently added a few more web cams. They have had the 10 cameras brilliantly covering their tiger exhibit for a few years, but listed below are the new ones. The web cams at Kolmården are nice for several reasons. The picture is really big and cover half your computer screen. Below the picture, at the left, is a link “Historik 24 h”. If you click it you get a view showing snapshots from each of the past 24 hours – might be good if you check in when it is late night in Sweden and the live web cam is all black.

OK, the cams are not live streaming, but when they work at their best the picture is reloaded every second and you get an “almost live” feel.

If you click the picture it is enlarged and covers your whole screen, though only with a still picture that is re-loaded every 1 or 5 minutes.

    RHINO CAM:
Exceptionally nice when I write this in December 2009 as it features a newly born white rhino calf with its mother in the rhino stable. The pictures shown are heartwarming. The two animals are seldom more than a meter away from each other. I watch the calf suckle the mother, I watch the gigantic rhino mother move with extreme care in order not to harm her little daughter. The calf rubs herself against her mother. So great!

    CHIMP CAM:
Indoors quarters. I have mentioned in other threads that the enclosures for the great apes are the week points of the Swedish zoos. What we see here is not brilliant but some Swedish forumster has mentioned that Kolmården is about to build a new house for the great apes.

I am guessing that the camera shows about half the indoors chimp enclosure. The rock is supposed to be genuine rock – the ape house is built around a piece of Swedish mountain. Lots of action of course, since chimps are lively…

    GORILLA CAM 1:
Indoors quarters again. Camera no 1 shows the big dry moat that is available to the gorillas and surrounds the “concrete island” shown in camera no 2. Ladders and steps lead down to it and they seem to use it a lot.

    GORILLA CAM 2:
The “concrete island” surrounded by the moat that camera no 1 shows. Filled with tree logs and other stuff for the apes to climb and make other use of. Unbelievably ugly, just like the rest of the great ape indoors enclosures at Kolmården, but hopefully functional for the animals. They can hide away from the visitors if they choose to, which is a good thing.

    PENGUIN CAM 1 (OUTDOORS):
Big enclosure with a nice view outlook to the fjord next to the zoo and the forests on the other side of the fjord.

    PENGUIN CAM 1 (INDOORS):
When I checked it out this afternoon it was almost a bit like a Monty Python piece of comedy. The room was empty but suddenly six or seven penguins marched in very fast, they all had a drink by the water container in the middle of the room, then they all marched out just as fast as they came in. Like half a dozen of people having (a VERY quick) drink at the pub.

    DOLPHIN CAM:
This web cam I find the least interesting.

AGAIN: if you visit when it is late night in Sweden the cameras will be all black – except, in fact, the rhino cam, which feature some kind of “night-vision” effect – but you can click on “Historik – 24 h” as mentioned above.

You're right that the chimps do not have the best indoor or outdoor enclosure. But they actually look like they thrive quite well, right? Kolmården actually planning to build a new great ape house in a few years. On The Chimp webcam you can see almost the entire mountain, the enclosure extends only a few meters away to the right of the picture.

And ofcourse, The Web cameras are great to watch!

Yes, a new house for the great apes sound like a very nice idea. But I am SOOOOO disappointed by that newly created gorilla island, shown on several pictures here on ZooChat. It is pure crap in my opinion:

The new gorilla island was built to Enzo would have to go out, until the great apehouse was renovated (saefty risk). I think it will be a new island or similar soon.
