I was organising my bookshelves yesterday and thought it might be fun to make a list of the zoo or zoo-related books I own (yes I know, its anal; but there's a zoo list thread on here so why not a zoo book list thread). Anyway, I tend to buy most of my books from second-hand shops so the majority of my zoo ones are old ones from the 60s and 70s. I've ordered them by publication date because that seemed easier than by author or country.

    1) "Little Arthur At the Zoo, And the Animals he Saw There", Mary Seymour (1887) [about London Zoo]
    2) "Whipsnade", Philip Street (1953)

    That's an impressive list.
I have most of the Gerald Durrell books but no more that are zoo related.

What is your favorite? I have two many zoo books to list but I would have to say "Wild mammals in Captivity" by Lee S Crandall is my favorite! Although Geralld Durell is my favorite all time author. I have a signed copy of menagerie manor and a signed post card given to me by Lee Durell which is one of my most prized possesions!

The wife and I are in the middle of moving house so I had a similar moment the other day - you never realise how much you accumulate until you have to pack it all into boxes! I've probably got too many zoo books to mention - although i'm quite jealous that you've got the Hal Markowitz book Chlidonias! As far as favourites go i'm torn between 2. I've always loved Zoo 2000 by Jeremy Cherfas, particularly as I remember the tv series, and its interesting to compare his predictions of the 'zoo of the future' with what we currently have. I've also got a signed copy of the Bafut Beagles. Not by Gerald durrell however - I spent time in Cameroon about 12 years ago and was fortunate to spend a few days staying in the guest house in Bafut. The book was signed by a chap called Peter who was Durrells cook in his previous trip to Cameroon. He also posed for a photo kissing a rhinoceros viper and took me on a jaunt to look for hairy frogs but thats another story! :)

I'm also in the process of moving so all my books are boxed up, although the other day I bought a copy of Animals in the wild and in Captivity by E.G. Boulanger, signed 1930 1st edition for the pricely sum of 50p :-D

One book I forgot is A Survey of the Hippopotamus in Captivity in the British Isles by John Frost 1996. It has one of my photos included, and I still couldn't remember it.

    My zoo library is:

Zoo: A History of Zoological Gardens in the West - Eric Baratay and Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier - 2002
    America's Best Zoos - Allen Nyhuis & Jon Wassner - 2008
The Buildings of London Zoo: Royal Comission on the Historical Monuments of England - Peter Guillery - 1993 (London Zoo)
Molly's Zoo: Monkey Mischief at Twycross - Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans with Maureen Lawless - 2000 (Twycross Zoo)
The Zoo: The Story of London Zoo - J. Barrington-Johnson - 2005 (London Zoo and Whipsnade)
    Zoo Tales - Oliver Graham-Jones - 2001 (London Zoo)

I'm looking to add to this in the next few months with 'Reared in Chester Zoo The Story of June Mottershead'

I also have a Durrell book somewhere, but not sure which one...

I also reccommend the first one on my list, very comprehensive history book. The last one on my list is also a good read.

Not one of my own books but in the 1970s I ordered a copy of Rails of the World from the library.

When it arrived I they told me my train book was available to take out.

Thought I would update this thread to see what interesting books relating in some fashion to zoological collections and zoo history other Zoochatters are fortunate enough to own; my collection is missing quite a lot of very noteworthy books but equally it also contains a few oddities I suspect not many people will have:

Another update; it will be noticed that I have added a lot more Gerald Durrell books to my collection, along with a decent number of other English-language volumes which are in some way connected to zoological collections - this rather redresses the balance given the fact that until recently most of my zoo books were in German!
