Apologies for the poor quality of the photos, I only had a phone to hand.

This is I think an insect, about 4mm long.

It flew and landed on the table in front of me.

What doesn't show is that it was iridescent orange, glowing very strongly even in the daylight.

I can see a couple of antennae and what looks like a carapace.

Any ideas as to what this is?

Well it's definitely an insect, as insects are the only invertebrates to have evolved flight.

I don't really know much more than that, I would hazard a guess at it being a true-bug (i.e. of the order Hemiptera), and can rule out some families (e.g. cicadas), or maybe a beetle (Coleoptera), but I can't go much further than that, having never been to Laos nor being an entomologist.

It's a tortoise beetle. To jump into genera is a bit hasty, but if I had to I'd say it might be an Aspidomorpha sp.

    two more photos

Better photos I found on another site. When I saw this flying, it glowed like an LED.
