Thanks for posting the plans Zooplantman, and the images on the first link are interesting. One drawing shows what appears to be Beijing's "Birds Nest" stadium with elephants inside, while Copenhagen's new pachyderm house is evoked in a couple of the other drawings. It is interesting that on the Zurich Zoo's website only certain pages can be translated into English, while the rest remains in German. I visited this zoo in 2003 and was fortunate enough to be there right after the Masoala Rainforest opened, and so I'm hoping that the future elephant complex will be at least half as impressive.

Looks very impressive zooplantman. I wonder what part of the zoo this is going to be. I dont recall any suitable terrain space, for something of this size?? Or is it smaller than it looks? The old indoor house would not be missed. If this is where it is to go.

Holding out on the good stuff;)

Thats a great article. I will print it out and go over it tonight.

    Thanks zooplantman.

    Some great pictures,

Lipzeg underwater elephant viewing. Just how thick/strong is that single window??

The Lion enclosure at Zurich. How much $$ went into that exhibit!!

What's interesting in all this is the insight we get into a zoo selecting a new design for an exhibit.

    Look at the Competition brief.
Then at the three competing designs that were chosen to be developed further
Then at the One posted on the Zoo's site (the winner).

    Upali

Is Upali, the Chester born bull elephant, still at Zurich zoo? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Upali was born in Zurich, then moved to chester in which he is currently living. His dad Maxi is the bull there.

It looks like a fantastic exhibit really hyped up about this ever since I i first read about Zurich having an elephant park. I love the river theme.

My mistake! thanks for correcting me. It's ages since I've been to either zoo, although I live not far from Chester. Am I right in thinking Maxi used to belong to Mary Chipperfield? Last time I was in Zurich zoo, May 2002, an elephant had been born just three days earlier.
