hi everyone Im surprised that there is nothing on this site about Belgrade Zoo in Serbia - its actually a really interesting zoo in a great city! Ive been to the zoo in Belgrade each of the 3 times Ive been to Belgrade (2004, 2005 and 2008) and it has improved each time. Of course it still has a long way to go and some of the enclosures are very small (some disgracefully small). That said, this does seem to be changing for the better. The zoo is built within the walls of the old castle that overlooks where the Danube and Sava rivers meet and some of the old castle walls actually are the walls of the animal enclosures - the lions, tigers, bears etc have old castle walls as their walls. Its an old style "zoos zoo" in that it has avenues with red roses lining them and things like that. So its actually a very good place to take photos. Of the animals, there is a fairly reasonable collection. They have a number fo white lions (which have bred successfully) and Ive got a great photo of a white lionness with a red rose in the foreground! They seem to specialise in white or albino animals actually and have white peafowl, some half-white, half regular peafowl, albino wallabys and a few others too. Interestingly the name Belgrade (Beograd in Serbian) actually means "White City". Not sure if the white animal theme is deliberate though. I saw a baby lynx there with its mother and Ive got some other good photos too. One thing that really impressed me about the place was how many animals seemed to be breeding - Ive always thought that this is a good sign in judging how happy animals are. There were a lot of baby animals in this zoo. They have an elephant, hippos, giraffes, zebras, lions, tigers, bears and all the usual "high profile animals" that zoos traditionally have had and of course a few other things too. All in all, this is certainly not the best zoo in the world - it is far from it! But they do seem to be improving it and making things better - but its a big job and will take time. Im pleased that the animals seem to be breeding regularly there and I will certainly go back next time Im in Belgrade to see what changes have taken place since I was last there! I recommend that if any of you are in Belgrade (or anywhere nearby) check this zoo out! Cheers, Grant PS: Im new to this site and I will try to get some photos up of Belgrade Zoo
well done. This thread is literally the only thing on Zoochat about Belgrade Zoo apart for a passing mention in a thread concerning an elephant! Maybe Sim can add Serbia to the list of countries.
That was probably about the infamous Asian bull 'Luka' who came from there- a much travelled male with two keeper deaths to his credit- I believe both while he was at Belgrade.
hmm, when I did a search for Belgrade Zoo before the only results were this thread and the following one which mentioned the elephant Twiggy going from Cricket St Thomas to Belgrade (http://www.zoochat.com/38/history-elephants-cricket-st-thomas-106114/). Now when I do a search for Belgrade Zoo there are two pages (all those other results concern Luka the keeper-killer). Interesting.
Belgrade Zoo is indeed a nice Zoo. I enjoyed visiting it twice now. I do hope they keep improving it althoug they are on the right way. Another Zoo in the region that is actually ahead of Belgrade Zoo in development is Zagreb Zoo.
Yes I agree. I really enjoyed Zagreb Zoo when I visited it in 2008. It was quite a good zoo back then and I can imagine it also would have improved since. I think there is talk about it in the Croatia thread isnt there?
For all the talk: it would be really welcome to have regular updates on what is going on in both zoos, new births, renovations / new exhibits, conservation ... educational stuff et cetera.
I agree! I love travelling in the former Yugoslavia and if I lived in Europe Id travel there regularly, but Im on the other side of the world and Id also like to hear about what is going on in the zoos there! Anyone in Europe planning a holiday??? Please go there and give us a report on Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana zoos!!!! Send me a private message if you want any advice or tips on any of these three cities.
