.....are being killed every day in Africa. Not sure I have seen this yet on Zoochat but WCS launched the 96 Elephants campaign a while ago and if you have not checked out their award-winning website you should, it is definitely worth your time. If you could help share it through social media channels and spread the word you would be doing great things for elephant conservation. Also, I wrote a very short blog on it for my companies website that was recently posted if you want to check it out.
With today being World Elephant Day I thought I would bump this thread i started a while ago to raise awareness on the plight of African elephants. Appalling to think that the US is the #2 market for ivory sales! Please consider following the link above and signing the petition to not sell or buy ivory and also to put a moratorium on the sale of ivory in the US. Thanks!
Pretty recently the Houston Zoo was promoting some petition to try and ban the trade and sale of ALL ivory in Texas. Anyone know if other states already have such a law?
New Jersey just passed one, and I think was the first. There are movements to do so also in California and New York, and probably other places.
The USFWS has pretty much banned ivory nationally. I need to get up to speed on what is going on exactly.
From the WCS mailer I just received: "Great news! NY Governor just signed the state's ivory ban into law, and now New York joins New Jersey as the only states to ban ivory sales within their borders. Read more below about these victories... and the threats to elephants that still remain." This was also listed: "Battle for the Ban Six months ago, we were celebrating as the Obama Administration announced its intention to impose a federal ban on ivory. Today, we're fighting tusk and nail to make sure it happens – and we need your help. Interest groups that value ivory profits over elephants' lives have launched an all-out attack. They've introduced bills in both the House and Senate that could kill any effort to implement the federal ivory ban and even prevent states from passing their own bans. Your representatives need to hear from YOU that Americans overwhelmingly support banning ivory, or they could cave to the interest groups' pressure. Send a letter to your members of Congress now and urge them to stand firm against any and all attacks on the federal ivory ban." There was a link to send a letter (which I did) and I urge all of you to do the same.
