Camera flash is irritating for some species. I think it is basic good manners not to use flash with animals, unless there is a real need/justification. The infra-red light ray used for active auto focus of cameras proved to disturb giant salamanders at Prague zoo. Thus salamander house is currently the only area in the zoo where cameras and cell phones with camera are prohibited. But to totaly ban them in every zoo is nonsense.

Ban cameras in zoos!!! That is just nuts. I agree with banning flashes and anything else that disturbs animals but banning cameras and camera phones comoletely is just stupid. Also the article says understanding animals in the picture he has his hand on a dead leapard's head with many other dead, mounted animals and guns around him. He does not look like an animal's friend to me!

I'm not against hunting, but this man is crazy! Training the big cats with slipper or newspaper roll and correcting their behavior by tranquilisers is not a clever decision. And I believe he is not a real wildlife expert, just self-proclaimed one. Why controlling zoo carnivores at all?! They're not circus animals! If they're hand-raised on purpose in SEA zoos, it's for making money on photoshoots and shows.
I suggest banning former zameens from newspaper interviews, although I am hardly an expert as I did not grow up with 14 types of them around the house BTW are there 14 types of deer found in the Deccan Traps? I think not Alan
This article, short as it is, is already a waste of space. Anyone who reads the actual article will see he is way out there. Also the camera thing seems to be just one very small part of the interview but the paper used it for the headline because they new it would draw attention. The statement that zoos need to revert to fear training and have a specific tool that each big cat is taught to fear is just plain nuts.
BTW he is not talking about the use of flash (which may be a valid concern), he is saying cameras on their own emit disturbing frequencies.
Rockets. That said, I would consider endorsing a ban on digital SLRs and their massive telephoto lens attachments. You're at a zoo, not on safari.
Maybe the educational value of zoos would increase if zoo visits couldn't be used as a hunting ground for pictures only. Even visiting a sanctuary it was sickening to see many of these visitors just press the button of their smartphones and walk on.
They in India should train people, not tigers (for example, not to poop in rivers & on the roadside, only in toilets; or to use condoms.)
