I would be interested to know what people feel is necessary for exhibit signage. Those who work in zoos or are frequent visitors are well aware that the vast majority of visitors barely read the signs, mostly just to see what species (and even then some people make a vague guess without looking). There are certainly cases of zoos that go on a signage binge where you cannot walk two steps before your visual senses are assulted and distracted from the animals! What signage impresses you, and likewise turns you off. What are the basics required: Common & Latin name, natural range, level of threat, habitat, diet, size? All or some? A picture often accompanies the info : photo, good lifelike drawing or even stylized image? A short description/paragraph? Additional signage to 'flesh out' the message? Obviously if we are talking about a major exhibit this is more likely, but what about a mixed aviary/aquarium? Is there a case for some species where a picture and the name is enough? Any photographic evidence would be appreciated of good signage (realise there are countless examples in the galleries, but would prefer specific examples).
